No, you cannot USE those receivers. You must pay for DIRECTV, it isn’t free if the receivers are accessible. Most likely, if your deceased mother cancelled service, the receivers need to be returned at a participating FedEx or UPS location. If not, call DIRECTV (number in my greeting below) and inquire about the situation. Have handy the account holder name, service and billing address, account number or phone number of account, and perhaps the Receiver ID of the HR44. Usually, all info is passed onto the surviving spouse. However, you may be able to work something out with DIRECTV. Whether you want to transfer the account over to yourself and pay normally (in this case you CAN have and use the receivers) or cancel the account, this can all be done.

Boxes cannot be transferred customer to customer as they are not owned but 'leased'.
Normally the boxes must be returned to DirecTV to avoid the account being charged any non-return fees (NRFs). (Which would go to the Executor of the Estate to resolve). You take them to a participating FedEx or The UPS Store, with the account number, for the free return. Keep receipt for the Estate records.
