AFAIK it is a streaming only device like a firestick so yes you need DTV streaming. You need a Gemini C71WK for sat service.

DirecTV Stream is app based and does not use a DirecTV device.
DirecTV via Internet uses the Gemini Air (or Gemini).
DirecTV via Satellite uses the Gemini with a Genie or Genie 2. Afaik, the Air is not used with satellite
This is the current iteration of DirecTV. In the past the service that was called DirecTV Stream used the Gemini. Yes, it gets confusing.
