geni install

We currently have 2 HDDVR's and 2 legacy receivers all going through SWM switch. Considering the upgrade to Genie. DTV representative said we may need new cabling. This is a non starter for me. House was built with RG-6 throughout. I also resist independent installers inside my home. I prefer doing my own work.

What are my options?

By legacy receivers I am assuming two D12s since you have a SWM system? You can swap both of those free of charge for a Genie HD DVR and likely an add-on wired Genie mini. This does not include a two year contract as it is considered a SWAP. Don’t say ‘upgrade’ to the agent as you may be putting yourself in a contract with that one word. Be sure to say SD SWAP. What are the current four receiver models that you have? Are you sure you have a SWM system? Does the LNB itself say ‘SWM’ or is there an in-line SWM8 or SWM16 MULTISWITCH?

IF you do have a SWM LNB, all that is needed to do is swap the legacy receivers for an HR44/HR54 and Genie mini client. If you don’t already have Whole Home DVR service, this will be an additional $3. This is MORE than doable as all you need to do is change composite to HDMI on both of those TVs, swap power cords, and plug in the coaxial cable that was previously plugged into the legacy receivers. The legacy receivers DON’T need to be returned to DIRECTV as they are no longer returnable. MPEG2/SD-only receivers and programming is being phased out so the receivers will become useless soon.

What are the models of every box you have? Legacy often is used to refer to boxes that are pre-SWM (or older).

Upgrade to the Genie requires a tech install. To do self-install you would need to order equipment through an authorized retailer (such as Solid Signal) and pay all the lease costs instead of getting a free upgrade. Still comes with a 24 month service agreement and $3 for Whole Home DVR.

In most cases they will reuse the coax.

No worries on your current cabling --It will pass all the signals you will ever need as your current D*TV system is working.

Update to original question. Yes, 2 each D12 with 2 HDDVR couldn't get them out to verify model #.

4 wire LNB and SWM 16. I think, going by memory, the legacy receivers are on RG-59. Home built 25 years ago and RG-6 was $$$.

There seems to be conflicting opinions above over whether I can do a swap on my own. Can I get a consensus here before I approach customer service?

You have a legacy setup  4 cables from the lnb = (non swm lnb) so no, you can't diy, you'll need a swm lnb for genie equipment which is swm ONLY you should do a mpeg 4 swap for the d12's which is different than an upgrade in that it doesn't come with a 24 month commitment. Keep the hddvrs and use the swap offer to replace the d12s with a genie and 1 mini, I'm not sure if replacing the d12s with a genie system qualifies for a "swap" offer since you're going from standard definition non dvrs to high definition dvrs so not like for like

OP doesn’t need swm lnb because they already stated they have a SWM16. Should be fine to just swap the two D12s for Genie HD DVR and client receiver. Easier done than said in this case. Just swap the coaxial cables and power cables between boxes and get HDMI cables to replace the D12’s composite cables.

HOWEVER, if it is RG59 cable, definitely get that replaced for RG6 cable.

Additionally, in the case that the two D12s are plugged into the LEGACY port on the SWM16, the cables should be put on a SWM splitter like they are for the two HDDVRs

You will need to call and have a Genie installed --They won't just send you one for a self-install -Do you have a 4k Tv --if so, ask for a 4k upgrade (free)

@detuch254 he also said he has 4 cables coming from the lnb so that's not a swm lnb

I'm not seeing a consensus. Can the Genie be purchased outright?

Right. I was just stating that an LNB swap wasn’t necessary because a SWM16 is already there.

Genie is lease-only. It never had a purchase to own option. And purchase to own options were completely discontinued shortly after the launch of the original Genie.

Call DirecTV and request a MPEG SWAP for the D12s. Do NOT say "upgrade" to avoid the 24-month service agreement. This is because MPEG-2 feeds are shutting down requiring the D12s be replaced.

Keep your two HDDVRs as they work with the Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54). If offered the Genie-2 (HS17) say NO as it forbids HDDVRs.

This requires tech install to update your connections so that everything is compatible for a full SWM setup, not mixed with legacy. (The D12s were the only MPEG-2 boxes that could work on SWM but cannot work going forward because of the transition to MPEG-4).

How long are the legacys expected to be fed? I'm inclined to leave what we have.

I would say that those D12s have until mid to late 2023. However, that’s just a general guess. We don’t work for DIRECTV so we have no clue when it is expected to happen.
