Genie 2 and VHS/DVD Recorder?
I am going to call Directv to upgrade from my D11 to the new Genie. I am hoping to get the HR44 or HR54. However, if somehow they manage to convince me to get the HS17 (Genie-2) instead (which I'm not planning on), would I still be able to record Directv programs on my VHS/DVD Recorder from the HS17? I just want to make sure before I call.
Thank you very much for your help!

Yes but not from the HS17. The HS17 is a video server only, it has no video outputs. In addition to the server, you will need a Genie client receiver for each TV. The client receiver is capable of outputting composite video to your DVD recorder with an external cable. The client itself only outputs hdmi.

Okay, thank you for the info. So I would just need the 10-pin composite cable like with the HR54 then?
Finally, one last question, I think... What is the difference between a Genie Mini, a Genie Client, and a Genie Lite? I think some or all are the same, but the terms are used interchangeably. I just want to make sure I know exactly what I'm talking about when I call them. Thank you.

Yes, the 10 pin is needed for the hr54 and can be used with clients as well when wanting to use component or rca cables instead of hdmi.
Genie mini/genie client are the same. The Genie Lite is a genie that does not function as a DVR (cannot record).

Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54) is a 5 tuner HDDVR with Picture in Picture (PiP). Works with Clients, HD non-DVRs, and HDDVRs.
Genie Lite (H44) is Genie without DVR built in. Option for some to start without DVR service, but could upgrade later with a DVR upgrade kit (proprietary external hard drive), making it about the same as the HR44.
Genie-2 (HS17) is a Headless Server tower. Does not go on a TV itself. Only allows Clients on the account, so full HD or HDDVR receivers are forbidden which hard caps the system. Post launch bugs, no PiP, and a new issue is that some people are getting charged $7 a month even though it doesn't go on a TV itself (possibly a error with the new billing system that they are migrating everyone to).
Mini Genie Clients (C31 thru C61 series) are extensions off any Genie model. No tuners of their own, so they each take one. If main box goes down, all Clients go down. Only Clients have a wireless version (C41W and new C61W), and the only 4K box (C61K) which requires the HR54 or Genie-2 to support it.
The 2nd/3rd generation Genie (HR44/HR54) with full HDDVRs is ideal setup, but Genie with Clients can be an ok place to start.

The C61K Mini doesn't have the A/V output needed for the 10 pin din cable.
