Genie 2 problems fixed

I’ve had my genie for a decade or so and it’s starting to act up and wanted to see about upgrading it. Is there a new genie model, or has the issues with genie 2 been fixed? Technology on Direct just seems outdated compared to some of the competitors

What model  number is your old Genie?

If it's an HR34 it should be replaced with a newer Genie DVR.

I don't think that the HR44 has been out for "a decade". And it, along with the HR54, are still the most robust and reliable Genie DVRs.

Exactly what sort of issues are you having?  Details please.

Be sure to try resetting the HR44 using the red button near the access card if you haven't already.

I don't think LItz was being a smart aleck, just being precise with the answer. I admit it doesn't feel like the HR44 has been around even 7 years, where does the time go?

With the freezing and lag a couple things to try. Red button reset as suggested, but I would also make sure you are not over 90% full on recordings. As the hard drive reaches capacity, it can cause it to lag a bit. Also check your recording manager, to do list, upcoming recordings, etc. to see if there are a bunch that don't have any upcoming recordings. When a season ends it doesn't delete it from possible recordings, so just check to make sure you don't have anything waiting for a long time that you don't need. Also some time ago there was a big update to the recording scheduler which for some of us left old settings in there as well so showing some duplicates that had nothing upcoming.

With your Genie do you have any other Mini Genie Clients? If so, how many? This is important as each Client takes tuners away from the Genie plus some processing as they cannot work without the main box. That is why it is better to have a full receiver instead of a Client to avoid those issues. No difference in monthly cost.

In the end if it comes down to your Genie needing to be replaced, do NOT upgrade to the Genie-2 (HS17). Still has some post launch bugs, forbids full receivers from being on the account, and had a recent billing issue where you are charged for one more TV than you have as it counted the box even though it doesn't go on a TV at all (just a server tower). In this case do a warranty replacement instead which depending on stock would get a HR44 or HR54.

Does Directv have any asperations of fixing the genie fast forward (jumping) problem, i.e. smooth out the FF?

What problem? The fast forward is as good as you will get with the MPEG4 signal because of the way it is encoded.
