Genie client question

Hello,

I had Directv remove a HR24-500 that I was using and asked them to re-activate a Genie client that I already have but previously had removed from my account.

They said they can not reactivate the Genie client but will send out a new one  for no charge.

That's fine but now I have a question.

Will the Genie client work on the same cable that the HR24 was using or does it need something to be changed?

Currently I have the Genie (HR54-700) and 2 mini clients connected, I also have a HD receiver (HR24) in another room.

Thanks

Yes it will work on the same coax, but if they send a C71WK Gemini you need a DECA BB to remove the internet from the coax to feed the Ethernet port.

Supposedly an installer is coming to bring it, so perhaps he will have the one I need.

Strange as replacement receivers are usually shipped.

DirecTV no longer reactivates boxes. Either it gets returned or recycled when deactivated.

You had DirecTV remove an HR24 and want to put a Client in its place? Why the downgrade?

HR24 has 2 tuners and 500GB recording space. That is in addition to being able to watch recordings on any other HDDVR (including the Genie HR54).

Clients cannot work by themselves. So if the Genie goes down then all Clients go with it. Dedicated boxes like the HR24 continue to work.

There is no difference in cost as it is $7 for the additional TV regardless what model of box it is.

Just for clarity your HR24 is an HDDVR. Saying HD receiver, usually means a non-DVR model such as H24. Just for reference in the future if needed.

I suspect an upgrade with the Client being an additional TV, not a replacement, according to the order. That is why tech would be needed and the OP will get a 24 month service agreement.

I had them remove the HR24 because it won't fit where I just relocated the TV too. Also we do all our recording on the Genie and weren't using the HR24 to record anymore.

I know  if the Genie goes down I lose it and the clients and I also realize I lose the extra tuners the HR24 provides, I'm ok with that.

I made a mistake on the model of the H24, yes it is a non DVR not a HR24.

Directv said they do not want the HR24 back, does that mean if I wanted to reuse it in the future they will not reactivate it?

Yes I did notice the 24 month service agreement being extended, I'm sure being a customer for as long as we have I was past any previous agreement.

Ok not fitting where the TV relocated to makes sense. My suggestion would have been to swap it with one of your working clients so you didn't lose capability (assuming there was place for the HDDVR of course). Also that puts more work on the Genie as you are at the max number of clients (3) that can be in use at the same time.

Ok so H24. Though it doesn't record, it has Autotune instead. And even with its own dedicated tuner still can watch what the Genie has recorded. I know for some they prefer Autotune instead of DVR, but not me as I prefer to watch on my own schedule instead of being a slave to the TV schedule (my opinion).

Correct, they will not reactivate the HR24 in the future. They stopped reactivated boxes a few years ago. This was a follow-up to them no longer offering SD-only service and being a lease-only model (cannot own boxes anymore). Though the HR24 being the last regular HDDVR is still a good model, they are no longer made and cannot be reactivated. So once deactivated it goes with electronic recycling. Though I would hold onto for a couple months to be sure, as they use the last HR24s in stock for warranty replacements.

Since the acquisition by AT&T, DirecTV has been heavily pushed into Genie-only setups. Pretty much a one-size-fits-all-and-you-will-like-it-because-we-say-you-must direction. That is why with the Genie-2 (HS17) you can't have anything but clients. So more restrictive then Genie you have.

Just wanted to be sure you were aware of the agreement. It is only secure once the box is activated so you have until the tech does the work to change your mind. Upgrades of equipment, including adding an additional TV, come with a 24 month agreement.

If I wanted to cancel what I requested today, before the installer came, would they be able to get my HR24 to work again? It was still working when I disconnected it.

If I keep the HR24 and it fails in the future, what would they replace it with if they don't make them any longer?

So, I liked what you said and it made sense to move one of my existing clients to the room where I just relocated the TV, so I did that, and I moved my HR24 to the room I took the client from.

All is working, on hold with Directv now while they try to cancel my order.

Don't know why I didn't think of what you had suggested myself.

Thanks

The retention department 'might' be able to reactivate the HR24. If that is all it takes for a save, they should be more than happy to do it as long as the system still has the option (even if in most cases they're not supposed to use it anymore). When you call DirecTV say "cancel" at the voice prompt to route you directly.

All that works then they can cancel the order as you weren't needing an upgrade. Save that free upgrade for later when it is worth it.

They cancelled the order, the receiver must not have been deactivated as it was still working, the agent I spoke to said it would not be deactivated, so far working fine.

Wasn't deactivated in the first place? Very nice. That was best case scenario.

If down the road you consider using that free upgrade, check back in the forum. Just in case there have been any changes between now and then, as agents want to place the upgrade order even if not best for you personally. I expect they are incentivized to do so as secures a 24 month agreement from you.
