Genie system
We were just upgraded to the Genie system based on our equipment aging out. We typically have taken one of our receivers and a portable dish to our football tailgates. Can I take one of the Genie minis or do I need to take the main HD Genie?

Yes, you will need the power inserter.

Mini Genies are clients, not receivers. They cannot be used without being connected to the main box. For this is reason it is preferred to have HDDVRs, or possible even an HD non-DVR, instead of a client.
If instead of the regular Genie line you have the Genie-2 (HS17), you are forbidden from receivers. Though even with the Genie line, regular receivers haven't been made in years making them more difficult to obtain.
With equipment "aging out", it is likely your portable dish is MPEG-2/SD-only which is now obsolete. You must have MPEG-4 going forward. For DirecTV this means a slimline SWM dish on a tripod/sled mount or the Winegard Trav'ler.

That's a good question, @Joepajovi. The DIRECTV Genie Technology (1st and 2nd generations) are not portable. In order to use your service as a mobile account, you will need a HD receiver since DIRECTV no longer manufactures HD-DVR receivers.
In regards to the SWiM adapter, the compatibility depends on the equipment model. Since you have an HR44, you will need a SWiM adapter.

Sorry danilo that's just confused. The genies ARE portable. That is, the servers themselves (such as the HR44). What are NOT portable are the clients ON THEIR OWN.
THE OP would need his HR44, an HD dish (which he says he has) and a power inserter.
