Genie vs. Whole Home DVR
Previous set up was HR44, HR24 and H24 with whole home dvr. HR24 died, replaced with C61 Mini, H24 replaced with C51 Mini (both Minis sent by Directv). Decided to replace H24 because on demand programs recorded on HR44 or HR24 were only watchable on whichever receiver recorded it. Now ALL programs recorded on HR44 are watchable on Minis.
Question is , since Minis are satellites of HR44 is Whole Home service still required or not?

Genie is DirecTV's Advanced Whole Home HDDVR. As such it requires HD, DVR, and Whole Home DVR service. Whole Home DVR is DirecTV's brand name of their Multi-Room Viewing (MRV) for recordings. Clients being extensions of the Genie cannot work without that MRV functionality.
So yes, Whole Home DVR is mandatory for the Genie. Only with HDDVRs but no Genie would the service be optional. Your Genie (HR44) cannot be on the account without it.

Whole home is included with any Genie --Since you only have one DVR (hr44) you only have ONE playlist --meaning when you press record on any mini location --you are recording the program on the HR44 --Should you download a VOD on the Hr44 --it should be playable and watchable from all mini locations as well.
You have whole home service NOW

Thanks, that clears that up. Even though the minis are “tethered” to the HR44 , Whole Home service is still required to enable the minis to access the recordings from the mothership. Got it !
