Getting to the bottom of Directv Genie Mini 4K 1080p in 2022
Hi All,
We have The Model: C61K-700 Mini Genie 4k at our TV, along with a Model: HR54-700 in another room with another Mini for the TV in that room.
We just bought a new Sony 65x95j TV. The resolutions and frame rates it supports are:
Here is the explanation of the figures from their website:
https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/articles/00014471
Here is the manual I Googled for for the Genie:
https://usermanual.wiki/ARRIS-Global/C61K
SO it appears from the specs and manuals that we should be able to get a 1080p feed from DIrectTV Genie Mini 4K but we cannot.
The Genie Mini 4K above has a menu of resolutions that let's us enable 1080p and 4k. The Diecerctv Listings show various shows available in 1080p. Yes when we try the InfoButton-> Audio/Video-> resolutions we are only offered 1080i.
What the F8CK?

The only 1080p content on DirecTV are a few PPV movies. And those are 1080p @ 24fps, which your new TV does support. All of the regular HD channels are either 720p or 1080i, depending on what the network broadcasts. And, of course, there a just a few 4K channels.

Almost all broadcast channels are 1080i, stations do not broadcast in 1080p. Your TV converts them to display in 1080p. As posted, there are a few PPV channels 1n 1080p and your TV will display those. You can't force the C61K to send your TV a 1080p signal if the source isn't 1080p.

The Movie Channels (example) Epix, Showtime, Stars only offer 1080P on Some (listed) movies for Download on (example) Channel 1558.
That's currently the only way you can get a 1080P movie from D*TV (excluding) PPV.
NOTE: if you have a AVR that will upscale as I do --when I download a 1080p Movie My SONY 1080 AVR upscales it to 4K on my Sony 80j.

yes i forgot about the occasional movie.
In general you will find that apart from a handful of live 4K events, and some 1080p movies, programs are sourced in 1080i ( or occasionally in 720p)
IMHO there's far too much concern about resolution. 1080i has the same resolution as 1080p, just less frames so the theory is 1080p handles fast motion better than 1080i. But most people can't see any difference

@litzdog911 It appears that is not true about the only content. Here are a bunch of games in 1080p:

@TexasBrit I watched the NBA games above in 1080i as I had no choice. The player's arms looked transparent as they waved them during the wide shots. It was awful.

Just about all flat screen TVs upscale 1080i to 1080p. They can't actually display native 1080i

@goldw1800 what happens if you try to watch these movies on demand without first recording them? Can you watch them in 1080p?

I always record them form D*TV VOD Channels --as the Channel Servers are located all over the USA --and No matter How fast my Internet speed is --When network hops are increased they download speed drops.
That means when you try to "STREAM" them as the download it will often "PAUSE" to catch up or drop the connection.
