HD receiver H24 compatibility

Yes, the H24 will work with a standard dish.

No, you cannot use your old access card.  Where did you get the H24?  It should have come with an access card.  If it did not, then you'll need to call DirecTV and they'll send you one for ~$20. 

Thank you! I haven't actually purchased one yet. I tried to get one from DTV but they insist on replacing my dish and selling me HD I just don't want HD at this time.

one more thing, is there a set up that needs to change to get the H24 to work?

is a DirecTV requirement to activate HD services if you order an HD receiver.  Unless of course you live in an MPEG 4 market that requires HD equipment to receiver local channels.

You won't be able to get an HD Receiver from DirecTV unless you activate HD services on your account.  So if that's what you really want, you'll need to order one from a dealer like Solid Signal.

My friend tells me he will give me the two receivers listed below, would you please tell me if I can activate these 2 receivers with DTV? I was told they are owned and can be activated

we are customers like yourself. so we can't check the status of this receivers. you need to call DirecTV and ask for the access card department. but 99% of the HR24's an H24's are leased NOT owned. and if they are leased, your friend is supposed to return them to DirecTV upon cancelation of their services, or force a hefty non-return fee. But you are going about this the wrong way. DIrecTV would not activate ANY HD receiver without subscribing to their HD package.

and getting back to your original question, you won't gain ANYTHING by connecting an HD receiver with an HDMI connection and feeding an analog picture. as of matter of fact, it might look worse.

If you really want to take advantage of your HD TV capabilities, you NEED TO SUBSCRIBE to an HD package to get the pristine HD picture that you TV is begging you for.

Thanks for your help! I appreciate your sharing your knowledge sounds like you have quite a bit. I'll abandon my quest for the HD receiver maybe next year. I was hoping I would get at least 720p with the HDMI. as it stands now they tell me the best I can get is 480 as is with the coax connection. 

correct.  but if you want to improve your picture a bit, connect your current receiver with composite cables (yellow red and white). this will give you a cleaner picture. not HD though.

looks like I don't have any connections left after the VCR/DVD and surround the only thing left is HDMI 😞   no more RCA jacks

FYI, since the SD signal is only 480p the HDMI connection on an HD receiver would probably not give you an improved picture anyway. The only way to get an improved picture quality is to have an HD signal.

I personally threw way the VCR the same day I bought my first flat screen (HD),  As i could not  take the picture quality of the VCR.  then a few months after I bought a PS3, giving me the ability to play blue ray and DVD's.  my DVD player then had the same fate as my VCR.  sometimes one have to let go of the memories attached to an electronic device so we can keep up with technology.
