Horrible Company
This is a horrible company and the way they treat their customers is pathetic. My receiver is going bad and their solution is for me to buy a new receiver for $100 to pay for it. It is their equipment and nothing I did and they want me to pay for a new receiver. Go elsewhere

That is definitely absurd that they are attempting to charge you that much for new equipment. Traditionally they’d just charge the shipping fee of $19.95 to replace bad equipment. I’d call back again (number in my greeting below) and threaten to cancel if the issue is not resolved. They should be more than willing to ship you out a new receiver. If worse gets to worst, you can file a BBB complaint.

What receiver model number?
Replacing defective equipment should require purchasing new equipment.

Sounds like you got a bad agent. A warranty replacement is $19.95 delivery.
An amount close to $100 sounds like the one-time lease cost of a box if you didn't have a free upgrade. That is much different from a warranty replacement.
What model is the box that is "going bad"?

The only charge for receiver replacement is the shipping cost of $19.95 which is waived if you have the protection plan so something isn't right.

He told me to get a new receiver that it would be $99.95 because I didn't purchase their warranty

You definitely got a bad agent. Callback and speak to someone else.
The warranty is already there, you don't purchase it. All boxes have their lease warranty. If a replacement is needed, it is $19.95 delivery.
What is optional is the Equipment Protection Plan. For $8.99 a month that covers delivery ($19.95), service calls ($99), and remote controls ($15, cheaper through online retailers). In my opinion you should not have to use those options often enough to make the Protection Plan cheaper, unless something is very very wrong.
Be aware that any recordings do not transfer from the bad HR44 as they are encrypted to their exact box. And depending on stock you get either an HR44 or HR54.

Sadly like many companies, they have so much trouble hiring good employees it can come down to getting a warm body to answer the phone/chat.

Not having the protection plan does NOT mean you have to pay for a replacement receiver, it means you have to pay for shipping ($19.95) you definitely had a clueless agent
