how does using a genie and two HR24-500"s work together, do the HR24's record to their hard drives or do they record to the genie only.

how does using a genie and two HR24-500"s work together, do the HR24's record to their hard drives or do they record to the genie only.  What about backing up two hours on a selected channel that's curranty available on the HR24's. does the genie have the same capabilities?

All dvrs record to their own hard drive depending on which dvr you  choose to record from.  The genie doesn't buffer channels like a non genie dvr does so you can't backup like you can on a hr24. You would have to be connected to the internet to use 72 hour rewind on a genie and 72 hour rewind isn't available on all programs

Thanks for the information on my question. That help me make the decision on adding a genie to replace SDDVR on my system.

Each HDDVR records to their own Hard drive. When you pull up the recording list, it shows from all of them. The Genie has 5 tuners and 1TB hard drive, each of your HR24s has 2 tuners and 500GB, so 9 tuners and 2TB between all 3 of them.

While watching TV on the Genie it does buffer live TV, but only while on. This is because the tuners clear for use by any Clients (do not get as HDDVRs are better than Clients). So the buffer clears when you turn it off.

The 72hr rewind/play from beginning needs internet connected as it downloads the program from the On Demand library. Not all programs have the option. Also be aware many channels have disabled FF/REW for their On Demand content, including this option. I would suggest recording from a regular channel so you can FF/REW as needed.

Do NOT get the Genie-2 (HS17) though it has 7 tuners, it only allows Clients, so forbids your HR24s. This would be a downgrade, plus if main box goes down then Clients go with it as they cannot work by themselves. A Genie and 2 HDDVRs is a more capable and reliable setup.
