Normally you plug the existing HDMI cable (or A/V cables) from your DirecTV box to your new TV. You then change the input to the one you are using, just like plugging in any other device to your TV.
However if your box doesn't have an HDMI cable, that is concerning. That suggests you may have a MPEG-2/SD-only box. Those feeds are in the process of shutting down, which is why that level of equipment and service was grandfathered in late 2015.
To make sure you get the right direction on everything, what is the model of this box (and any others you have) and by what cable were you using to connect to the old TV?

In most cases you connect an HDMI cable to both.
