Recordings are not allowed to be transferred. They are encrypted to their exact DVR. You could use the old fashion way of a VCR to record in real-time in SD quality.
Copying recordings to a USB drive or hard drive to watch on a computer is not possible as the recordings are encrypted and use a Linux-based partition named XFS that your computer would not be able to identify. However, copying recordings from one hard drive to another to watch on the receiver is possible. This does not apply to other receivers, only the DVR that recorded it.
Only a company called weaknees.com can transfer recording & settings to another larger hard drive that is replacing the original hard drive in the DVR.
The transferring of the old drive to new drive with the same DVR is difficult, however I have done it several times using Linux and a partition tool called GParted. There is a video on YouTube about it, but OP please let us know if you want to back it up and whatnot. If you live close to me I could help you.
