How to sign up for MRV if you're using your own networking (not DECA) ...

How to Sign up for MRV if you are on Ethernet (not DECA)

OK folks, what I am about to say is not fully confirmed .. It's more from information I've pieced together from multiple sources than from one single message. It may not be 100% accurate, but should follow along similar lines:

How to Sign up for MRV if you are on Ethernet (not DECA)

  • * On May 13th you might start receiving a message indicating that you need to call in to DIRECTV to activate MRV

  • * If not, on or about May 20th, MRV will stop working and you will receive the message.

  • * You will need to call DIRECTV using the phone number from the on screen message. It might be the main DIRECTV number, it might be a special number (I don't know).

  • * Beginning on May 13th (not before), DIRECTV CSRs should have a screen on which to allow you to activate MRV .. They will have to read you some legalese that you must agree to before MRV will be activated using your home network.

  • * Once activated, you will be charged $3/month for the use of MRV and DIRECTV will not provide you support for MRV beyond the question "Would you like to upgrade to DECA?"

Odds are there will be a few growing pains as this ramps up.

Maybe I am dense, probably, but does that mean that we will be able to opt out of DECA and use our own network, we just do so at our own risk?  I was under the impression that it wouldn`t be a choice.  I hope it is, it would save the installation call, MRV is working great on my home network

If MRV is working fine with your current network, then you don't need to "upgrade" to DECA.  But you still need to activate MRV on your account before May 20th.

No one was really sure what would happen until now. You also have to understand that there's no guarantee that MRV will work or continue to work reliably without DECA, and if it doesn't you're on your own. With or without DECA you also have to pay the $3/month fee for MRV.

As noted on other post I have used beta and had no problems, will possibly opt-in for $3 a month but not for $150-$200 start up costs

I just called to get everything setup and was told I could use my existing setup.  I'm not 100% sure if they were OK with that only because I've been using the beta (I told him I was), but he definitely gave me the option.  I've been using wireless so I opted for DECA (the price was right too).

I'll ask again....as I did in another post.....what about this "$50 Activation Fee" that has never been mentioned before(especially in regard to this thread's subject??????????

No idea... I wasn't charged that, nor was it mentioned in any way.  I already got the order confirmation and it was $99 for the " Whole-Home Upgrd and ICK" (which was removed) and $49 for installation, plus tax.

Just call and ask.  It only took 10 minutes.

Where is there a $50 'activation fee' mentioned? The only fees I'm aware of are the $99 upgrade package, up to $49 for installation and $3/month MRV fee after that.

sungam,

Read user tulanejosh's post in the thread below. He specifically mentions the $99 + $49 and then mentions "avoiding" the $50 Activation. can't say his info was crystal clear, but it definitely leads to my "speculation". Link to that thread is below(I still haven't learned how to use the new "Quote" forum feature:0)

Here's user tulanejosh's post verbatim:

"ok so i called back. got a rep that was trained. my upgrade is for tomorrow as well (5/14). Cost was $99 + $49 + tax. I've been a customer for a while (2004ish), so I avoided the $50 activation. I did have to sign up for another 2 years as well, but that wasn't a problem as i don't intend to leave anyway."

P.S.

After "re-reading" his response he does clearly state that the "cost was $99 + $49 + tax"!!!! It's the subsequent statement that "got me". Maybe they "waived" the $49 and only charged him the $99 plus tax. And maybe he will read this and clarify that.

It would appear that users who were still within the original two year phase of service are being charged an additional activation fee.  I can only assume that's because their original installation costs (Directv's costs) have not been amortized fully.  By installing the new MRV service, the original 2 year contract would be terminated now and the MRV 2 year contract would take over.

Note that older customers are not paying the fee.

dcd,

That's kinda the jist that another user told me as well. But PLEASE clarify.....this is a charge that ALL users not with DirecTV for at least 2 years are required to pay.......OR......this is a charge that ONLY "users having DECA/SWim installed" and have not been with D* at least 2 years are required to pay???????

I am asking this because I got my son "hard-wire networked" this past weekend(he has a HR20 and a H23), he got the H23 software update yesterday.....and he has only been with DirecTV for about 9 months(he changed from Comcast at my nudging). He has 3 kids and will NOT be able to afford the $50 Activation fee(and he is SOOOOOO excited about being able to watch his HR20 DVR content on his H23 in his bedroom). If they make him pay $50 i guess "dad will have to subsidize that investment":0)

I just spoke DirecTV twice about being able to use MRV without DECA.  Apparently, all us that are using home networking will be forced to go to DECA once the BETA period ends.  I received this from both representatives I spoke too.  Supposedly, the BETA period ends today and the MRV service will be cancelled, which is yet to be seen.  Since I do not require a equipment upgrade, I would only have to pay $99 for the switch install (instead of $148), and no activation fee.  I just signed up for service 3 months ago and have a 24 month contract.  Supposedly no contract extension would be required either.

However, I decided not to pay the fee.  I believe it is rediculous for DirecTV to force customers to upgrade to DECA.  Why BETA test a product then not allow the product to be used the way it was BETA tested.  They should have only allowed testers to use DECA technology if they were going to make us use it in the end anyway.  It kind of defeats the purpose of a TEST.  I do understand that they cannot support home networking issues, which is why they are forcing DECA, but that brings up my point in the first place.... why allow it to be tested that way if it was never the intention to let us use it that way.

d-ellis,  You got bad information and I would suggest everyone slow down.  Directv will activate MRV with or without adding DECA to your system.  If there is no DECA, there will be no installation or activation fee.  I have that on top authority and you can take it to the bank.

It's official, and exactly as Litzdog originally poisted.  You can use your own networks, no need to buy a DECA system.

That's great news!  I will give them a call back this afternoon and will post how it goes. Thanks.

dcd,

Thanks for getting the official word on the "Activation Fee". That will make my son very happy!!!!

P.S.

Looks like Day 1 of GoLive may require a full-time TECHKNOWGUIDE to monitor this forum to dispel "rumors/bad CSR info":0)
