HR24 Hard Drive failed

Hard drive failed the short, long and threshold test. I am assuming it is a goner. Called DTV and they refused to replace it with anything but a Genie. I already have a H44 and three wireless clients. I need a box I can use in addition to that setup. They don't want to offer me anything but a 17. I don't want that. Any ideas? I guess I can go buy an Esata drive and hook it up to get the current box to work. Very frustrated, its like they want you to take a worse setup.

Right, if you want a DVR and more tuner freedom, keep your current setup. The HS17 is super restrictive as far as standalone HD and HDDVR receivers since they can’t be activated on the account.

You can definitely buy an e-SATA bay to replace the internal drive, that will solve your problem. Just be sure it’s the right e-SATA one for DIRECTV.

And which e-SATA would that be?

weaknees.com sells them and you can lease an HR24 if they still have any.   DTV is no longer making the HR series so all they have are refurnished HR24s and HR54s and they have run out of the HR24s.  They can also replace the internal with a larger one.

You can replace the internal drive on the HR24, lots of people have done that (including upgrading the drive to an SSD for better performance) even though it's not recommended by Directv

@TexasBrit

I thought that was against rules for leased receivers to open the box up. That would void warranty sticker.

@stoeck if your HR24 is owned then you can ideally open it up and replace the HDD.

Yes it's against the rules but no-one seems to care. Some people put the old drive back in before returning the box. But if it's non-returnable, no-one cares (or would ever know).
