HR54 External Hard Drive Options

I record a lot of sports in 4K and I would like to upgrade from my current 6TB external drive on my HR54 to the largest size possible as I am down to about 25% free space.  I have read on here that some people have gotten 12+TB drives to work.  Do you need to do an eSATA enclosure and hdd for that to work?  I tried a 22TB Fantom eSATA drive but after the HR54 formatted it I got a message saying that the drive was bad and I could not record anything with it so I returned it and went back to my 6TB drive for now.

I was just wondering if anyone who has gotten a larger size to work could let me know what they did to get it to work.  Thank you, kindly.

Hi, ATrainIU24. We're sorry you're getting errors while porting the 22 TB Fantom eSATA drive. We will contact our team to gather more information about your query and get back to you in 24 to 48 hours. DIRECTV appreciates your understanding. Jason, DIRECTV Community Specialist

The Genies (such as your HR54) do not have a hard cap on an external drive, though in the early days it was suggested 4TB. So yes people have used 12 TB and larger. Though I don't know how anyone has that much time to catch up on those recordings.

It must be an eSATA drive. An enclosure is suggested for protection and cooling.

If you didn't lose what was on the 6TB than you were lucky as they were not meant for swapping around and transferring those recordings, so reformatting was expected when you plugged in back in. Also be careful as the eSATA port is a bit delicate.

I did not try to move any recordings to the new drive I just unplugged the old one and plugged it back in when I found out the new one would not work.

I am just wanting to know how people were getting the larger drives to work, or if anyone could recommend the larger drive that they used.

AFAIK they are SATA drives in an eSATA enclosure.

Thank you for waiting, ATrainIU24. That's right! Thank you, Juniper. The HR54 eSATA port can support larger external hard drives. We recommend you visit any electronic retailer for questions, specs, and problems related to external hard drives, as DIRECTV doesn't sell them and can't guarantee they will work well for you. We appreciate your understanding. Jason, DIRECTV Community Specialist
