HR54 with multiple Gemini

Just curious if anyone on here is successfully running HR54 with more than 2 Gemini wired to it? Like 3-5 of them.

HR54 can pair with 8 clients

DTV accounting can only hand 7

Only 3 can be active at one time

Only 1 can have 4k

Is that a distillation of all the known facts?

Well close. Just some clarification:

DirecTV new accounts only allow up to 7 devices. Legacy system has no such cap.

Only 3 Clients at most can be in use, though they are all active on the account.

You can have multiple 4K Clients, but only one using a 4K channel at a time.

As for the OP's root issue, the Gemini is a Client so follows the same rules. But there has been a bug in the software affecting multiple Genie setups. Not Gemini specific.

Are they working on this bug?

With the multiple reports about this, and being their more current preferred setup (Clients instead of receivers), it is expected to be on their list. Beyond that none of us can know for sure as we have no access to their software developers.

My concern is though the HR54 is the newest generation of Genie with the current software is if they are only prioritizing Genie-2 (HS17) being the Client-only setup that AT&T was heavily pushing them into in recent years.

Just another point where I prefer HDDVRs over Clients.

The main issue to me is the fact that there will only be one active client and I’m getting this message of too many active locations. It’s like HR54 is forgetting to release tuners when I’m checking out different clients. Plus it should say which clients are active it does not.

The forgetting locations since they don't have tuners of their own is very annoying. Other than the normal resetting each box in turn all we can do is wait until they get the bug worked out. My perspective is regardless if Genie or Genie-2 this should be top of the list for fixes as affects the entire setup and has been their heavily pushed setup since AT&T acquired DirecTV.

If the limited 4K content is more important than the dedicated tuners and additional recording space, then I would definitely consider using your next free upgrade to the Genie-2 (HS17). The HR54 can only support one TV at a time using a 4K channel where the HS17 can support two. And the HS17 supports up to 7 Clients at the same time so you can fully use what you're paying for. Remember it only supports Clients so if you have any HDDVRs/non-DVRs in the mix they would have to be replaced.

Yes hopefully this gets better soon. No one in technical

support seems to be able to help and it’s been tough to get someone on the line who understands and isn’t an overseas agent who is just reading how to fix something. Should be dedicated US people to help customers.

You may think it should be dedicated US people, but like many companies they outsource as is their right. Nothing requires them to only pay for in-country options.

Of course nothing requires it. I’m my opinion they should. I appreciate your help but that is pretty much stating the obvious.

All CSRs are using the same scrips written by DTV, few if any have actually seen or even used the equipment.

Office of President got back to me they are working on the too many active locations error. I told them I believed it is related to adding a Gemini to HR54 as a client. I have confirmed that there are no issues if Gemini  is co located with genie issue happens when you add more Gemini to system.

So this is still ongoing. I have multiple Gemini connected. We know only 3 can be active at once. But you should be able to turn one off and keep trying different ones and they should work. But they keep losing connection and you reset the HR54 and it’s a constant game of finding which one is connected or not. When you look at client status it will show which ones are “wired” connected to HR54. Sometime it shows 4 or 3 of them. They should all stay wired and give up their tuner for another when needed. The new software update I thought fixed this but it did not as far as I can.

This is another reason why I will always suggest dedicated receivers/HDDVRs over Clients. Now that AT&T has fully sold off DirecTV, I hope the new owners will decide to go more customer friendly options instead of the all-in-one (and-you-must-like-it) direction that AT&T had taken with the Genie-2 (and other Genie setups by discontinuing regular boxes).
