is it possible to have genie and a second DVR either standard or HD on one satellite

I currently have three standard DVR and one non DVR in the home.  One of the DVR is in a room that we sometime allow students to use during the school year.  I would like to install the Genie and two mini genies in three rooms.  The question is can I also install an additional HD DVR or even a standard DVR in the room that students use.  We don't want to put another mini in that room.  We don't want the occupant to be able to have access to the genie, my wife is afraid they will delete her programs from the genie.

I have been told that this can be accomplished with some sort of "block".

@Constructive it is possible to have Genie, clients, and some non DVRs and HR24. As long as the Genie is HR34, HR44, or HR54, the system should work just fine. If you have the HS17 though, this is NOT possible because the HS17 receiver only allows mini Genies to be activated on the account.

But, there is no way to "block" recordings from a mini Genie because it relies on all the information from the regular Genie.

To clarify the  question,  is it possible to have a Genie DVR and a non Genie DVR on the same satellite?

@doghunter yes, if the Genie DVR is an HR34, HR44, or HR54, you WILL be able to have these receivers on the same satellite. You may need to have a bigger multiswitch with more tuners, but having them on one satellite is more than possible. You can have any receiver from the D10-100-HR24-500 working. But, I do recommend not getting any SD receivers because the MPEG-2 is being phased out.

If you have a regular Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54 / HR54R1) then YES you can have other HDDVRs on the same receiving dish.

The exception is the Genie-2 (HS17) tower as that FORBIDS everything but Clients.

You can set the Genie or any HDDVR to not share recordings with the rest of the home. This is an all or nothing setting, so you cannot hide one just from certain ones.

Mini Genie Clients are extensions of the Genie, so they will always see the recordings of it as they cannot work without it.

Do not replace any regular HDDVRs (or even special R22) as they work with the Genie and provide more capability with the Genie.

However you say "standard" DVRs. What are the models of every box you have? This may affect your options.

You CANNOT use a D10 with the Genie. They are completely incompatible.

Genie is SWM-only.

SD non-DVRs thru D11 are not SWM compatible.

D12 can be used on SWM, but not compatible with multi room viewing (MRV).

SDDVRs thru R15 are not SWM compatible.

R16 like D12 was adaptable to SWM, but not MRV.

R22 is essentially an HDDVR (MPEG-4) in hiding as was needed in certain markets.

HD non-DVRs H21 and up are compatible, so you cannot use H20 with Genie.

THR22 (special TiVO model) can be on the account, but is not MRV compatible. Also doesn't work well with On Demand, plus you pay for TiVO service on top of everything so is not suggested.

Best not to even ever mention any D models, unless customer specifically asks. Those are MPEG-2 boxes that are severely outdated. DirecTV is shutting down the MPEG-2 feeds turning them into bricks.

I would like to know the exact models the OP has. Some say "standard DVR" when they mean an HDDVR that is not a Genie. Then of course there is the special R22 which is still better than a Client.

If they truly have MPEG-2/SD-only equipment, then there is the MPEG swap option which is different from an upgrade.

I have to following equipment

Family room R22 DVR,  Master bedroom R22 , bedroom #1 D12 receiver and Guest Room R22.

I plan to upgrade all my equipment including the satellite to HD. I hope  to get a genie and two minis for the family room, masterbed room and bedroom #1,

The guest room is where I would like to put a separate HDDVR or some other device so that the guest (or whoever stays in that room) can record/delete their own programs, but not be able  delete programs on the genie

I believe you can lock other genies from deleanything. Yes look under Playlist share settings. Found in recording manager. Recording manager is at the top once you enter the recordings list. From there you can hide recordings and also set it so on only the master genie will delete recordings. So other then the price of an extra genie mini which will be an addition to your monthly bill, for the guest room, you can get it setup that way.

@doghunter

You have three R22s and a D12.

Do NOT get Minis unless you are adding more TVs.

Upgrade D12 to Genie.

Your bill goes up by $10 HD and $3 Whole Home DVR.

Should already have $10 DVR service.

R22s get their HD capability turned on.

Need to be connected to TV by HDMI.

In display settings change Guide HD Channels from "Hide HD Channels" to "Hide SD duplicates". Under resolution make sure the highest your TV supports is checked.

Remember HD recordings take more space than SD, so your hard drive can fill up quicker.

So the biggest thing is if you are keeping the same number of TVs is to keep all your R22s. They are the special model. Right now you have 2 tuners per DVR and 1 for the other, so 7 total. If you replaced with Minis you would loses capability going down to 5 since the Minis have no tuners of their own. Think of it as all TVs working off one box, which is why dedicated DVRs are better than Minis.

Mini Genie Clients cannot be locked out from affecting the main Genie's recordings. That is one of their downsides. They have practically full access to the main box.
