Managing recordings
When I ordered DirecTv with HD Whole House DVR, I was given the impression I can manage recordings (including viewing the To Do List ) from all tv's that had a HD receiver. For the most part it's true with setting up a recording and viewing a recording. However I found out that you do not have the Manage Recordings option under MENU on all HD Receivers, only the TV to which the whole house DVR is connected to.
I'm trying to get confirmation if this is the way it is suppose to work as installers are not really sure, and I've had two different opinions when calling DirecTv.

Yep, that's how it currently works.

You cannot Manage Recordings on the HD recievers. With WHDVR the HD/DVR is the server and the HD recievers are the clients of that server. The clients have limited access to the functions of the server. You can request a show to record on the server, but you cannot access the main features of the DVR because the HD clients don't have access to that feature. The one good thing on having more then one DVR source in system is this for this particular reason, but it also has its down falls as far as being able to choose which sourse to store the show on and also, in the same case as your, you cannot operate the Manage Recordings from one DVR to the other.

Thanks for the responses. It's not a big issue since it's just my wife and myself using the system. It would, however, be nice to see what is set-up to record in the future from all sets.

Hopefully this is something DirecTV will add in the future.

It's interesting we just got the whole home DVR and our upstairs DV receiver had the option "manage recordings" (although the WHDVR was downstairs - could've been a programming error? Now it only says "manage auto tunes. " We've restarted the unit but it does no good.

Autotunes is resident on the HD reciever and isn't related to Whole Home and is not present on a DVR.

We have had Directv for four hours and Whole Home is not all it was implied to be. We had DishNetwork with one DVR and no additional equipment and were able to access all of the recording and playback features from any television. Whole Home is a disappointment. Had I known this was how this would be, I don't know if I would have stayed with DishNetwork, but I definitely would have had the installation done differently. I hope this changes.

I'm sorry princess, but I have seen the way Dish Network works and they have nothing to compare with Directv's WHDVR service. With Dish you can only share between 2 rooms unless you have a 3rd or 4th splitting off of those outputs, but then even still the 4th is playing what's on the 1st and the 3rd is playing what's on the 2nd. Which if you have 4 locations with Directv then all locations can watch entirely something different, while 2 locations, which one of them is the DVR, can watch something that was recorded. Yes to start it is not a perfect science when watch pre-recorded shows, but with more then 1 DVR in the mix everyone is happy.

Judging a Directv installation with Whole Home DVR service after four hours of use may be a bit premature. I'd guess that one wouldn't have found even half of the slick features available. Mostly I'd guess that all one does is compare the system to one in the past rather than judging it on it's own merits.
Really now, who sits in the living room and schedules House, then goes in the kitchen to schedule the ball game only to leave there and go in the bedroom to schedule Days of Our Lives? If that is an absolute requirement then Directv will surely disappoint.

I'm also new to the Whole Home DVR service and from what I'm reading I can only watch a pre-recorded show or schedule a recording from the non dvr hd receivers? For example: if someone is watching the tv with the dvr and I go in my room and watch a football game that is currently being recorded but I want to extend the recording, I won't be able to do that without going back to the other tv with the dvr and interrupting their show to extend the game?

True. But it won't interrupt their show if you extend the game's recording time.

If you don't want to leave your room, then simply open the guide and select the program following the game to record. Before the game"extension" option became available a few software updates ago, recording the program following the game was commonplace.

Thanks for the responses. My problem was that I scheduled a game to record from my pc at work which doesn't give me the option to extend. When I got home to watch the game, it was in progress already and I had no way to extend other than as dcd said, select the next program after the game to record. I'll remember that for next time. Thank you.

If you were on the DVR where the game was recorded, you can press info, then more info, then recording and you'd see the record option screen and you could add the extension, all the while the game would continue to play in the corner. Of course, you can hit pause as well.

If you are looking for a way to schedule shows on another DVR than the one you are sitting in front of, the downloadable app for the iPhone or BlackBerry will allow you to schedule a show to record on whatever box you want on your WHDVR network. It actually works great in that I will be watching something in one room, see a commercial for a show that I want to record, grab my phone and use the app to schedule the show to record in a different room. The only thing that stinks is I still can not find a ways to manage all of my DVR boxes from one location. The app does not fix this problem nor is there a online solution that I can find.
