Moving a Wireless Genie Mini
We have a tv in our detached garage that has a firestick and had been using Locast on the odd occasion when my husband needs to catch the news. With the demise of Locast we wondered if he could move the wireless genie mini from my home office to the garage without needing to have a technician come out and do it. I called DTV but the non-native English speaking CSR said a tech was necessary. Sorry but I don't buy that answer.
Can it be moved since it is in a DETACHED garage?

So long as it can get a signal the wireless mini can be moved by you.

Just give it a try and move it. The main issue would be if it's too far away from the main Genie's wireless signal.

Being able to move the wireless Client without needing an install at every location is a main perk of the box. The wireless video bridge (WVB) has a range of up to 80 feet in ideal conditions. Walls and anything between buildings (since garage is detached) can reduce that range.
If garage is not within good signal range, then there are 3 other options. All require a tech to install.
1. Relocate wireless video bridge (WVB) on the coax that would be in a better spot for the garage. You could also have a 2nd WVB installed if needed for better overall coverage between the two.
2. Run coax from the existing setup to the detached garage to have a wired receiver or client.
3. Have a 2nd receiver dish installed on the garage itself. This would only work with a receiver, not a Client as those need to be connected to the physical setup of the main Genie. This is the last option if the garage is too far for wireless or to wire from the main setup.
