You need a SWM slimline dish on a sled /tripod mount or a roof mounted self aiming dish and any H or HR receiver but once you get outside on your local channels spot beam you lose all local channels.

For DirecTV (not Direct TV) you need a slimline SWM dish on a tripod/sled mount that you aim yourself. The alternative, and more expensive, is the Winegard Trav'ler.
You also need an H or HR mode, just like at home. Any D or R models are obsolete and must be replaced. Exception is R22 in specific setups.
If you have a Genie setup, any Mini Genie Clients (models starting with C), cannot work without the main box as they are not receivers but Clients.
Once you travel outside your home spot beam, locals provided by DirecTV would be lost. You would need to use a regular antenna on your TV to pull up what is in range while traveling.

Is it still true that DirecTV/ATT will not add two Genie devices to the same account? I ran into this a while back when I had DirecTV at home with a Genie and a few clients and wanted to add another in my RV with two clients (one for bedroom and one for outside mounted TV). After purchasing the Genie from a third party reseller I called DirecTV/ATT to activate the receiver and was told they could not add two Genie devices to the same account and I would need a second account. Not what I wanted to hear as I don't want to pay for two account since I can only watch TV while at home or when we're traveling in our RV. I ended up returning the second Genie and stuck with an H24 receiver in the RV up until I dumped DirecTV all together. Thinking about adding it back again but only if this issue has been rectified. Anyone else out there trying something similar?

It is highly unlikely DTV will ever change the one Genie per account rule. The H24 would have worked without a Genie. You could have taken the home Genie and clients with you.

Correct. Only one main Genie per account as they were not designed to work together. No issue to rectify as the one per account is how it is built.
Instead of Mini Genie Clients, you can use receivers like the H24 you had or even HR24. Only Clients must be connected to the same setup as the Genie to work as they are extensions of it (no tuners of their own) so cannot work by themselves.
AT&T was strongly pushing for a client only setup. Regular receivers haven't been made in years and there has been difficulty getting them activated on accounts recently. However, now that there is a new co-owner with DirecTV, perhaps they will refocus the equipment direction. We shall see.

Thanks for the prompt responses @shannon02 and @Juniper. I'll just try to get an H24 for the rig at some point and add it to the account if I decide to go back.

Remember any box you add to the account will add a 24-month agreement. It is an upgrade, regardless of if you get it through DirecTV itself or a 3rd party. If the box is just for the RV, then it will have to be 3rd party as DirecTV only installs in the residence. But if you have any Clients in the home, you could replace one with an HD non-DVR and move it between the home and RV as needed so you don't pay additional for the RV TV.
As a note, if from DirecTV there is a possibility they might no longer have any H24s so could be an H25 instead. The key difference is that the H25 is SWM-only like all Genies so cannot work on the older multiswitch setup.
