new receiver boxes
I received a phone call and the person stated that he was calling from Direct TV and that I needed new receiver boxes. He said that the boxes would be mailed to me and then a technician would come to my home and install them. He then began to ask personal info: address, birthdate, last four of social, phone number. I questioned why he needed this info and he said that he wanted to varify who he was speaking with. I became uneasy about all the questions and hung up. Was this a valid call from Direct TV?

Maybe. DirecTV is replacing older non-HiDef equipment with newer equipment. What DVR/Receiver models do you have?

That was a scam call. DirecTV never calls you to update equipment or software. And they certainly never ask for your birthday, even if you call them.
DirecTV is legitimately shutting down their MPEG-2/SD-only feeds, which requires some customers to swap out legacy equipment. The scammers are using this info to jump off and make their scam easier. If you are affected, then you call DirecTV's official number, they don't call you.
What are the models of each box you have? That information which is not personally identifiable information (PII) will determine if you need to call DirecTV or not.
If new equipment is needed, the tech brings them. They don't mail and do a tech separately.

In addition to the proactive call and "verifying" info, they asked for birthdate. That changes any loose "maybe" to an immediate get off the phone. (since you cannot send a massive electronic shock to the caller's end).
