Old box, new DVR
I still have one old box with the access card. It is used in a guest room very rarely used. I have previously activated and deactivated the box as needed, but since I upgraded to the Genie DVR, it won't work. Account support says I need a new Genie for the additional room. Tech support says my old box should work, but it isn't. Didn't last year either. What is the right answer?

While the D12 is SWM compatible it is now obsolete as DTV is shutting down the MPEG2 channels plus if you have an HS17 Genie2 it is not allowed on the account only clients are allowed. You should be able to get one for free with the DTV swap offer. There is also the probability that you are on AT&T new RC1 account system that doesn't allow receivers to be reactivated.

Please, let us clarify this for you, we can meet in a Direct Message to take a closer look on this, and confirm which are the receivers you have to check their compatibility and confirm if the older one should work or if an upgrade of your equipment would be needed. Please check your DIRECTV Message Inbox (It's the chat icon next to the bell icon in the upper right corner of the Forums)

DirecTV no longer allows reactivation of boxes. They have fully adopted their leased model by this point. That means upon deactivating a box you either return it or recycle if they no longer want it back.
They are shutting down their oudated MPEG-2/SD-only feeds. The D12, though was able to function standalone on SWM, is the last MPEG-2/SD non-DVR box DirecTV made. It is now legacy equipment that is required to be replaced. If it was still active on the account when you got the Genie, then a Mini Genie Client would have been part of your upgrade to replace the D12.
Unfortunately as the D12 was already deactivated, they had no way to know to replace it upon installing your Genie. If your Genie was only recently installed, you could try calling back. When you get the voice system say "cancel" to allow you to speak to the rentention/cancellation department. Explain you were unaware you could no longer do the vacation/seasonal disconnect and reactivation of a single box, so the D12 should have been replaced with the Genie upgrade. Hopefully they will be able to do a new order to replace the D12 at no cost to you (other than the $7 monthly for the additional TV fee as normal). Be aware that if they are able to do so, your 24 month service agremeent will update to be from the day the new box is activated instead of when you got the Genie.
Hopefully the Retention department, or the forum help team that are sending you a DM, can order what you really should have had if everyone was on the same page when you did the initial upgrade. Good luck.
