overheat, remove cover from HR24-100

I'm getting a message on the TV saying my receiver is overheating. I unplug, let it sit awhile, then the message appears again. Stays cool if I point a fan at the unit. I want to take the cover off, inspect, find and replace the fan inside. I would send it off for replacement but don't want to lose my recordings and settings. I don't see any screws to remove and think it may pop off. If someone can say how the cover comes off please post details. If someone has replaced the fan and can give info that would be appreciated, too. Thanks

Pages two and three of the following thread have fan info:

This page shows where two of the tabs are along the bottom of the cover. There are six total, two more on each side and easily distinguishable.

These HR24's seem very durable and long lasting. People regularly change their fans and hard drives, putting in much larger drives. Don't pry or use excessive force when removing the cover. If it doesn't come off easy, you don't have all the tabs released.

Having this info and being able to do things myself makes me even more glad I'm a DirecTV customer.

all I can say is that removing and/tampering with any DirecTV receiver and/or component is a violation of your DirecTV TOS.

I should have put a disclaimer in my reply. For people who own their equipment, no issue. For people who lease, do at own risk.

correct, but HR24's are seldom owned.

Try putting one of those laptop coolers on the bottom of it if that hr24 has a usb port like some of the other dvr's

If one were to open a leased DVR and some CSR took exception upon discovering that, one might find what it costs to buy one.  Recommending in an open forum that someone open and alter a leased DVR is not very responsible in my opinion.
