Pixelated Playback on DVR
Recently (6 months or so) the recordings on certain channels are pixelated and choppy when watching the playback. Most of the standard channels are fine. When I watch shows on those channels the picture is fine. It is just the recorded version that is a problem. At first I thought it might be the hard drive, but that should cause all of the channels to playback choppy. I'm not sure how to "reset" the DVR.

That DVR is getting a bit long of tooth. As a general rule pixelation is primarily a result of low signal strengths. If you'll take a look at the signals it may give us a clue as to what your problem is.
You'll find these readings under "Menu" -> "Setup" -> "System Setup" -> Satellite -> "View Signal Strength". Note the "+" and "-" symbols next to the "Satellite" and "Tuner" entries where you can toggle the readings between the various satellites and both DVR tuners. If you have a DVR it's important to check BOTH satellite tuners.
Fill in your readings for each satellite and tuner on the new post you create, using the example below as a guide. (The example below is only an example and not a form that will appear in your post unless you "cut" and "paste" it.) A properly aligned dish will show 80-90s on most of the relevant transponders (although some will be low or zero):
Satellite transponders (32 total at 101º)
[Most of your standard definition channels are beamed from 101ºW]

See this thread at TivoCommunity ....

Does that describe your problem?

I realize it's getting old, but what can I say, I'm cheap and I don't want to buy a new one. Especially if I'll have the same problem.

The TIVO thread is very similar to my problem, except for two things. I only have one receiver and it isn't hacked. And the stuttering is a problem on Headline News and HGTV (and a couple others others), not the local channels.

Your signal readings look fine. I suspect your Tivo's drive is dying.

If it is my hard drive, shouldn't that affect all the recorded programs? Not just ones from certain channels.

Not necessarily. It's pretty clear, that your problem is not signal-related. So that pretty much only leaves the Tivo's hard drive. It's getting pretty old.

Call Directv. They will replace your Tivo with a more current model DVR and the replacement is free if you have the Service Plan, otherwise ~$20 for shipping for a DIY install.
