poor picture quality- very dark
Hello,
I switched from cable to Directv a few weeks ago. One of the things I'd heard is that the picture quality on Directv is superior to that from cable. I'm sorry to say that I'm not experiencing this. The picture I'm receiving on many channels is not as crisp (even those that were not HD on cable) and many channels are very dark. I did not experience the dark picture when I had cable. Is there something I can do to adjust the brightness of the picture- adjustments on the receiver, etc?
Thank you.

What TV do you have (exact model)?

There certainly may be some cable companies with superior HD video quality compared with DirecTV and Dish Satellite, but those are the exceptions, not the rule.
Perhaps your TV settings need some adjustment?
How is the HR24 connected to your TV?
Check out Ch306 HDNet. They broadcast the highest quality 1080i HD video. Is the DVR's "1080i" light on the front panel lit?

The reason I asked about the TV is that this might be another "color space" issue.....anyway let's see what the response is..

Hello,
The receiver is hooked to the tv component one input. Yes, the 1080i light is on the front of the receiver.
Thank you for your help.

I don't see any posts on the web about color space with this TV, although there are not many around and probably very few with the HR24. "Color space" is the definition of the way the colors are output to the TV. Many receivers/DVRs use YCbCr color space. Some use RGB extended, some use RGB limited. They all work fine provided that you have a TV that correctly detects and adjust for the color space. Maybe yours does not adjust correctly for the RGB Limited color space output by the HR24. Some TVs have a "black level" control which allows you to adjust for this.
If you can't find any info about this for your TV, the only real way to find out if this is a TV to Hr24 issue is to borrow an HD receiver from someone else (or pay DirecTV for a service call and get the tech to connect a different box) and see if the picture is still dark.
Of course, it could also be that the lamp in the TV is failing and it's just a coincidence that this happened at the same time you moved to DirecTV.

I have a Sony 61" projection TV and recently replaced the lamp. Viola, like a new TV.

Having what appears to be the same problem. My picture seems to be dark and almost looks like an "upconverted" HD pic ie not crisp and bright. The picture as been crisper and brighter in the past but has been dark etc for a while - Also found my DVR was only selected to 480p changed it to 1080i and for a vew days the picture was Great but has since gone back to darkish etc. Any thoughts out there

Best to start your own new thread using the "Create New Post" button on the main forum page. Your problem may very well be different from the original poster's. With a new thread you can provide more information about your equipment, location, and troubleshooting you've tried so far. And this forum software makes it difficult to track or respond to folks that add onto someone else's thread.
