Pros/Cons Ethernet vs. DECA
I have 4 DVRs in my Whole Home network all connected via Ethernet through my 8 port router. Also connected are my Slingbox and Nomad.
What are the benefits of using Deca instead of Ethernet? Are there any functional benefits, such as the playback response time when viewing a recorded show from another DVR? Sometimes I get a red line to the left of recorded shows with a message indicating it cannot be viewed as another recorded show on that DVR where it was recorded is being viewed. Would DECA fix that?
I do not have SWM so I believe I would need an upgrade to my dish.

Wow I totally missed Libob's post. So it cleared up the response time issue. Does anyone have any idea about the red line and the fact I can't watch anything else from that DVR?

One program streamed from a DVR at a time is the rule, so DECA wouldn't have any influence on that. If your system is working good, probably no compelling reason to switch. I switched my system from Ethernet to DECA some months ago and it works flawlessly and everything via a single cable is a nice feature.

The key benefits of DECA over ethernet are:
You still be limited to each DVR only being able to stream its recordings to one remote Receiver/DVR at a time. That has nothing to do with the networking topology. And, yes, you would need SWM. But DirecTV will upgrade all of that stuff for you as part of their supported WHDVR upgrade installation.

one of the biggest benefits of DECA over ethernet in my opinion, is the ease of adding additional equipment. with DECA just the satellite cable is needed for both the satellite signals and network connectivity, as opposed to ethernet, where both an ethernet cable AND a satellite cable would have to be run.
