Receiver stops, shuts down and resets a lot....

I recently got a new HD receiver because my old one went bad. Everything is working fine except that about every other night it randomly stops, shuts down, and a few minutes later resets. What is going on?

What model Receiver do you have?  Look for the label on the rear panel or behind the front panel access card door.

Typical causes of random resets include:

* Poor AC power quality. Be sure the AC power cord is properly inserted at both ends. How old is your home's electrical wiring? Powering the Receiver using a UPS instead of a surge protector is highly recommended.

* Overheating. Is your Receiver in an enclosed cabinet? Could the fan be dirty or blocked?

No other power goes out and it is plugged in a surge protector. It is sitting on a shelf with plenty of air around it. I have never had any power problems in the past.

What was the problem with your previous Receiver?

 

Probably time to Call DirecTV to request a replacement Receiver/DVR.  It's free if you have their Equipment Protection Plan, or within 90-days of installation.  Otherwise ~$20 for shipping.  Or ~$50 to have a tech come replace it for you.

It would just shut down and would not restart. It would cycle through the lights on the front over and over and nothing would ever load up. I just got this receiver less than two weeks ago.

The first thing I would do is plug the receiver directly into the wall outlet, bypassing the surge protector.

If it's only two weeks old you should be able to get a another free replacement.  But first rule out something else being wrong, like perhaps the surge protector.
