Recording a series--first run only--please help!

My DVR is set to record several series.  When I originally set it up, it defaulted to record all episodes--first run and repeat.

Now that I have several series recording, it is just taking up too much space to have that many episodes recording.  So, I went into each series and set it to record FIRST RUNS ONLY.  Well, it is basically just ignoring that I set it to that--and records every episode of every series I record.  I have gone in and checked each to make sure it is set to first run only.  I have even reset several of them.  Nothing works.

These shows are all recording on their original channel and I can't blame the guide because it is doing it for every, single show.  It is like my DVR doesn't recognize that I have told it to record first runs only.

Has anyone had this problem before?  Any solutions out there?  This is very frustrating!  I thought maybe after recording an episode or two, it would stop doing that, but it has been weeks and just keeps recording every episode!  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What shows?  Some shows, especially those that broadcast daily on networks like Fox News, Comedy Central, etc. don't have very good  Guide Data so the DVR doesn't know if they're first run or repeats.

It is happening with every series I record--which are numerous!

Criminal Minds, The Closer, How I Met Your Mother, Modern Family, Burn Notice, 2.5 Men, The Middle...

Hmmm.  Your problem is rather unique then.  You might try resetting the DVR using the red button behind the front panel access card door.

This issue isn't that unique.  I'm having the exact same problem.  I just installed a new HD receiver and almost every series I've added as First Run is recording all episodes including repeats.  This is happening on shows that were not an issue with the old receiver like Hawaii 5-0 and Top Shot.   It even recorded the same show twice and I confirmed it was set to First Run only.

I have a DirecTV HR22-100 receiver and it has been installed for only a week.    I'm in Newark, CA 94560 and I have a Multiswitch.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Different issue.  When you create a new Series Link in the Series Manager, the DVR will always record the first upcoming episode, regardless of whether it's first run or repeat.  After that, it will work properly.  Provided that the Guide Data is correct of course.

I don't have an R15 to test this on, but I have a theory.  I'd guess that all of the programs that were available in the guide were scheduled to record under the "both" setting.  When you changed to "first run" subsequent showings (ones not already scheduled) will be first run but the already scheduled ones will be both.

Take the worst offender and under manage recordings -> series manager delete that series altogether.  Then set it up fresh using the first run setting.

I'd guess that you only changed to first run recently and if you give it a couple of weeks the reruns will clear out.

I changed it about a month ago.  I will try resetting and I will also try completely deleting the series and then adding it again.

However, I don't think that the issue is that it will just start working properly because it has been about a month and some of the shows (Criminal Minds and The Closer) run everyday, and it has recorded them everyday.

Thanks for the advice.  I will give it a try!

Know this.  Although I don't know if this is your problem, on some programs the stations have done a terrible job of putting in the correct code that the DVR uses to see if the program is first or rerun.  On some stations the same program will run multiple times each day and all will record.  It can be a pain.

There is another complicating factor.  Channel 101 will often carry series that were originally on Showtime for example, and may be a few years old.  However, they are new to the 101 so will record as first run.
