Recovery of recordings
I just replaced an HR24-500 with a new Gemini which I like a lot so far. I had an external hard drive connected to the HR24-500 where I captured my recorded shows. Is there a way to recover these recordings?

Sorry, no. The recordings are encrypted to the receiver that recorded them and cannot be transferred to a new receiver. As a note, the Gemini is a Genie client so it relies on the main Genie to record content.

Gemini works as a Client. It has no recording space of its own. It just accesses what is on Genie just like any Mini Genie. Because of no tuners or recording space, I find Clients in general (Mini Genie or Gemini) to be a downgrade from a regular HDDVR.
Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54) has a 1TB Hard Drive, compared to the 500GB your HR24 had. They do support external hard drives, but unlike earlier HDDVRs which had a hard cap of 2TB, there is no known cap so 12TB or more have been used (though that is overkill to me). The 3rd generation Genie has a revised version (HR54R1) which removed the eSATA port so no external drive support for that one.
Genie-2 (HS17) has a 2TB internal. Unlike the other Genies, it does not allow you to have HDDVRs with it. It only allows Clients. Only the 1st run had the eSATA port, so going forward it does not support an external hard drive.
Recordings are not recoverable as they are encrypted to their exact box, even when using an external drive.
Personally the best setup is a Genie (preferably HR44 or HR54) with HR24s on other TVs. More tuners and recording space built-in, not all locked to one box, and can use external hard drives on each if needed.

I was aware that older units were like that but one of the Geminis benefits was that the change could be made without loosing recorded programs. That must have meant recordings on the Genie. What is the recording capacity of the Genie?

As Juniper stated, Genie DVRs HR34, HR44, AND HR54 all have a 1TB HDD. The newest HS17 headless Genie server has twice the storage, a 2TB HDD.
