Relocating Equipment in Whole-Home System

Thanks.  Actually, I want to retain the HR20 since: (1) I use it with my external antenna for local channels (which the HR20 handles with its ATSC tuners), and (2) I have an external hard drive attached to it with a number of programs and events that I want to retain (I would lose them with another DVR).  That's why I want to move my 3D capable HR24 (with an AM21) to the living room and my HR20 to the basement.  DTV previously agreed that retaining and swapping the locations of the two DVRs would be the best option in my case.

oohh.  ok.  so just removed the coax from the receivers and relocate them.  with the HR20 leave all the "gadgets" connected to it, with the HR24 just take the coax cable and leave everything else in there.  there should be no reason to shut down the system.  but be sure to connect the coax FISRT before applying power to the receivers 

Thanks,   I currently have the DTV feed in the living room split with one DECA feeding the HR20 and a powered DECA attached to the router.  I assume I'll need to leave the splitter and powered DECA in the living room to interface with the Internet and to also feed the HR24 with a RG6 cable.  So I'll move the HR20 with the attached DECA to the basement, and leave the SWM in the basement.  Is that correct?  If so, do I connect the HR20's DECA to the SWM?

This is real easy, if you don't move too much or too little. See the pic attached of a HR20-100 wiring. Detach the coax where I've marked the pic with a red X. Take the assembly and connect the X to the coax that is attached to the HR24. Then attach the HR24 to the coax you disconnected at the X. Do not move anything else. Plug in the AC power and they should take off. You may have to reset your router to reconfigure the box's new locations.

Just one final question.  I have a three-way splitter installed by DTV in the living room that splits off the two connections to the HR20 and one to the powered DECA attached to the router.  I will move the splitter to the basement with everything attached except the connection going to the router.  I will, therefore, need a two-way splitter in the living room for the router/DECA and HR24 connections.  Can I use a commercially available splitter or will I need a special one provided by DTV?

Nope (and good analysis by the way) you need a green labeled Directv splitter, link to supplier attached.  The stuff available locally won't work.

There is one thing confusing re your post though, Directv only markets 2 way, 4 way and 8 way.  I've attached pics of each.  They must be green labeled.  If the splitter that is currently what you call a 3 way is not a DTV splitter, order one to fill that need as well so you have an all DTV system.

DTV will not provide any splitters to the customers.  you would have to acquire the SWM 2 way splitter on your own.  and you  need a "special" DTV approved 2 way splitter.  note that there is no SWM 3 way splitters, which leads me to believe that you are using a non-SWM splitter.

Actually it is a 4-way splitter with only three outputs in use (the same as dcd and ped48_installs' illustrations).  I'll order one before I make the switch.

good.  so you are in good shape.  order (2) 2 ways to replace that four way attached to the HR20.  no reason why to have a 4 way if you don t need the extra ports.

I just ordered two 2-way splitters, so I won't need any terminator caps.  I won't be able to make the move until next weekend, after I receive the splitters and I have some free time.  I'll let you know the results after that.  Thanks again.
