Replace outdated equipment?

Received a text message that stated that my equipment would soon not be supported and I need to replace my equipment with updated, supported equipment.  Before I call the number on the text message, was hoping to verify that this is not a scam.

If you have sd equipment it's true it won't be supported in the future (Directv is closing down SD channels) but this text is almost certainly a scam. What number are they asking you to call?

What equiipment do you currently have?

The number shown is 877-777-9080, which is Directv, but as a link in the message do not know if it would go to that number or be redirected.  Have an HR54-200.

Hey @JWoods10101, thanks for reaching out! We want to help you to verify if the equipment upgrade is required in your account.

Let's meet in a Direct Message to take a closer look on this. Please check you DIRECTV Message inbox (it's the chat icon next to the bell icon in the upper right corner of the Forums)

The HR54 Genie is the last receiver made before the HS17Genie2 came out and doesn't need to be replaced.

@JWoods10101

DirecTV is shutting down their MPEG-2/SD-only feeds. That means some customers do have to update equipment. Notices are not sent by text, so that would be a scam.

As you have the 3rd generation Genie (HR54), then you have a MPEG-4 setup. Unless you have a 2nd dish (detached garage, RV, etc.) with a much older box, then you shouldn't have anything to replace. As long as you don't have any D or R models (other than R22), you are fine.

OK, so I think that I have found part of the problem.  On my account, I have 2 receivers listed.  I have the D12-300 (which was returned years ago) and the HR54-200 (which is currently in use).  So, I am guessing since the HR54 is what is currently being used I should have nothing to worry about.  I had DIRECTVhelp offering to chat, but did not find any of the icons they were referencing in their previous message.  Thanks, though, for helping to set my mind at ease.

The HR54 is fine. But if you have a D12 listed on your account then you are paying for it. How was it  returned and when ?

Because the D12 is so old directv won't want it retuirned. So you can just call directv and ask it to be removed from your account. Looks like you never did this. You won't get back any of the money you have been paying for the D12 but at least things will be tidied up.

If you have a D12 still listed as active on the account since you returned it, that would be an issue. Call DirecTV and remove it. That is the last MPEG-2/SD-only non-DVR receiver made, so they don't have to verify return. The $7 additional TV fee would stop going forward, but will not be credited back to when it was returned as they have a 60 day billing dispute policy.
