returning equipment
I've been asked to return a piece of equipment after cancelling DirecTV. The only description provided is as follows:
Make: DIRECTV
Model: HR54-200
Serial: C54BC5NY301430
There was a mobile client on 'tv #2' but it doesn't match this model or serial -- the only other thing we have is a satellite that DirecTV installed on the roof, and a thing in the basement that DirecTV bolted into my wall -- when I remodeled the basement, it was impossible to remove so we actually still have it attached to a piece of the wall just sitting there in the basement -- I have no idea how to remove it (seems to have a hard plastic chassis that hides the attachment mechanism)... can you tell me what DirecTV is asking me to return and how I can deal with this?

HR54 is the Genie and goes on a TV. The little box (model number starting with 'C') is a Mini Genie Client. The Client cannot work without the main box so you have the HR54 somewhere.
The HR54 is returnable. The Client might not be depending on model number.

So what happens to all the little clients and doo dads (wires, power cords, satellite dish??) when DirecTV gets back their HR54? Do they just leave it up to the customer to dispose of all of this stuff?

First check the model numbers of those Mini Genie Clients.
If any are returnable, then you send back in the same manner as the Genie (HR54) receiver. Any that are not returnable you are free to recycle instead.
Only receiver/client boxes are returnable. Everything else (wires, receiving dish, etc.) are customer owned upon install. So you can leave where they are at or recycle. If you recycle the receiving dish it is suggested to leave the mounting plate to avoid leaks. The LNB (the "eye") goes with electronics, but rest of receiving dish goes with metal.

I've been trying to get an issue resolved. The system they put in my house has no hdd, isn't capable and att sevice people will not fix the problem. I call service number and get hung up on. Try to resolve the problem on line and no one cares enough to listen and they hang up after waiting for hours on line or on phone. Going to att store and get rid of everything att!!!!!!!

It is impossible for a Mini Genie Client (i.e. C31) to work without a main Genie. Clients are not receivers, no tuners or recording space of their own. They are extensions of the main Genie receiver.
So based on what you posted, you have the 3rd generation Genie (HR54).
Genie: HR34, HR44, HR54 (or revised HR54R1)
Genie Lite: H44
Genie-2: HS17 (server tower, doesn't go on a TV itself, but is still a main Genie).

The Genie Lite (H44) is the only main Genie that isn't a DVR by default (hence is a 'H' model only). It can use a "DVR upgrade Kit" which is essentially a proprietary DirecTV external HDD only for that model.
All the others are HDDVRs, including the Genie-2 as it is a Headless Server (hence model 'HS') and so is a server type HDD setup.
Bottom line, your Clients could not receive service without the main Genie they are paired with. Without that they are expensive bricks.

yeh but they cant seem to figure that out and remedy that. I'm supposed to have the full blown package. Service man came out and told me to look it up on att site and fix it myself and left. Wasn't supposed to get genie light.

@cdbangsite
Sorry, just realized you were not the OP of the thread. So there has been some confusion This thread is about someone who had canceled service and cannot find their HR54 to return.
If you are having trouble with your service, I suggest starting a fresh thread specific to your issue. Include model numbers of boxes you have, symptoms, error messages, etc. and other users will try and help.
