Router/modem

If you have DIRECTV are you allowed to purchase your own, and if so, what are the available products that those with experience in this area would recommend ?  Your assistance is appreciated.

DirecTV does not provide internet, they are a TV provider (by their own satellite). So they have nothing to do with your router/modem question.

It would be whatever internet service provider (ISP) that you have if you may purchase your own router/modem (Gateway is the two in one unit) or not.

For example, AT&T which is an ISP, requires you to use their proprietary Gateway ($10 monthly, listed as a line item or by having the package cost higher by that amount to hide it). But you can have your own additional router by utilizing passthrough mode. But the modem portion must always be AT&T.

DTV doesn't use modems/routers so no you can't buy one.  DTV is a lease only service.
