Save recordings (external)

Can I save recorded recordings to an external drive for later viewings (and how)? I'm running low on my HR44-500 disk drive space? I note there are USB connections on the unit. Where  can I get a comprehensive HR44-500 manual?

DirecTV HDDVRs, including the Genie (HR44 is 2nd generation), support external eSATA hard drives only.

The external is used instead of the internal, so you cannot transfer recordings. If ever needed you can return to the internal drive, by unplugging external and then rebooting, to access what is on it. However this is with caution as the eSATA port is rather delicate, not intended to plug and remove multiple times.

Regular HDDVRs have a hard cap for the external at 2TB. The Genie had a suggested limit of 4TB, but there is no official hard cap and some have gone up to 12TB or more without issue.

your HR-44 has a 1 TB internal disk --What you can do is connect a ESATA external Hard disk (the USB port) on the Receiver can NOT be used for adding a external disk.

By adding a New external DISK --your recordings will remain on the internal DISK --meaning when you disconnect the external drive the receiver will boot up on the internal drive.  ALL recordings are made on your D*TV receiver can only be played back on that receiver.

Careful that wording is a bit off. Instead of starting a second sentence you added it in parenthesis which changes what you said.

What you can do is connect a eSATA hard disk. The USB port on the receiver can NOT be used for adding a external disk.
