SD channels going away
We have a Winegard dome satellite dish on our rv that is not HD capable. I understand there may be a device that can be installed (some kind of box) that adds HD capability to the dish. Is this true, and would this be included in the equpment that DirecTV is providing for the conversion?

Not true. It's not possible to convert your Winegard dome dish to an HD-capable dish. You'll need to replace that dish with a Winegard Trav'ler dish. And DirecTV won't upgrade your RV dish. They only upgrade home dishes.

Ok. I didn't think so, but worth checking. I guess we'll just keep DirecTV until no more SD channels worth watching, then cancel.

To be clear, it is not SD channels going away but the MPEG-2 feed that only carries SD. The newer feeds are broadcast over MPEG-4 which carries both SD and HD.
You either need the Winegard Trav'ler, or a slimline SWM dish on a tripod/sled mount. DirecTV will not upgrade the RV itself, as that is done by yourself or 3rd party, but will do an MPEG swap on the home itself if needed. There is not an option to covert the dome to DirecTV's MPEG-4.
What are the models of each box you have?
Are you taking one from home when you travel, or is it installed exclusively in the RV?
As SD-only TVs haven't been made in over a decade, it would be expected that SD versions of the broadcasts, even on the MPEG-4 feed, would probably go away at some point. But there is no info on this yet so will probably be a while.

We have an R22-100 receiver. Looks like we're looking at a $2K upgrade. Not an option for us. I appreciate your feedback. Thank you. If I find out any options for folks like us, I'll report back.

If that R22 is the only box you have, that unfortunately would need to be replaced. But if you have a 2nd box, even if that 2nd needs replacing you can keep the R22.
The R22 is a special model that is MPEG-4 capable, essentially an HDDVR in hiding. But that functionality is only enabled if you have at least one H or HR model on the account.
It is a change in an era for DirecTV. They are complimentary doing an MPEG swap for the home, but RVs and the like are custom options that is on the consumer's cost for any updates. Hopefully it will be another 30 years before there is any kind of huge update like this.
