SELF INSTALL

I am currently a Stream customer, but i am unable to have a tech install at my apartment complex because of how strict the leasing company is. I am wanting to buy equipment from Solid Signal and install myself. Would DIRECTV let me create a new account for satellite and activate the receiver i purchase from SS? I plan to have a dish pointed out my window and mounted on a table. I have clear view of the southern sky.

Hi, @dillardjm. New installation for DIRECTV via Satellite requires a technician visit, and only DIRECTV provided equipment is allowed. Visit DIRECTV Residential Terms of Service - Legal Policy Center to learn more. - Shania, DIRECTV Community Specialist

I am unable to get it installed by a technician where I live. I can do the install myself. I have done it with DISH Network. I am trying to give you my business and I have limitations that is beyond my control.

We appreciate your business. However, you'll need to engage with the Multi-Dwelling Unit Department to help you with the installation. Please contact them using this phone number 888.342.7288. DIRECTV appreciates your understanding. - Shania, DIRECTV Community Specialist

Traditionally the answer would be yes, you can do this all yourself if you really want to. However in the last couple years some have had difficulty activating boxes from Authorized Retailers (such as Solid Signal). Though to be fair that was mainly for boxes on an existing account, not a new account altogether so you may have an easier time.

If you can go through with this, I would suggest an HR24 or H24/H25 if a single TV. Only get a Genie (HR44/HR54), with HR24(s) if you are going to have multiple TVs and want the convenience of watching recordings from any TV. Stay away from the Genie-2 (HS17) unless you want a restricted setup.

I would also make sure you are up to date on your rights as Federal regulations supersede the leasing company rules. Which applies to both DirecTV and Dish Network.

Why do you want to switch from DirecTV Stream to DirecTV Satellite?

I want to convert to satellite because my apartment complex locks everyone in with the internet they use and it’s slowwww. Single digit mbps. Too slow for live tv. I’d rather have satellite so I have full control over it.

The apt locks everyone to single digits? That is horrible. I remember 1.5Mbps and that was a struggle just one PC, never mind a combined household. (And that was when it was a joy coming from 14.4 and 28.8 Kbps)

If you are paying for your own internet, then I would contact your ISP about an issue (technical or apartment management interfering with your paid service). If it is provided as a perk of the apartment itself, I would raise complaint with management as either they need to allocate appropriate connection for everyone (out of what is available) or the infrastructure in the building needs an overhaul. Though could just be bad internet option to the building to begin with.
