SIMPLE DITHER LOCKNUT QUESTION.

I have 3 HIDEF SAT DIRECTV DISHES. None of them have the DITHER LOCKNUT setup referred to in link:

http://www.dbsinstall.com/PDF/DirecTV/HD_KaKu_job_Aid2_06.pdf  Half way down page and also called Locknut Screw.

I was wondering when this locknut was discontinued and why and without it, how do you DITHER your Sat dish?

Could someone please explain this to me and thank you in advance.

Great picture,  but my unit does not have the Dither lock screw either.  Sorry,  I am unable to help and surprised you have not had a few replies by now.

The antenna in the link you provided is an old AT-9 ka/ku dish which hasn't been manufactured in quite a few years.  The current AU-9 dish says "Slimline" on the front, and is the only current DIRECTV HD dish.  There are lock screws and fine tune adjustments for both azimuth and elevation on the AU-9 dish.  Please verify and post back that you have a Slimline dish.

Happy to see your reply Chendrickson.  I have Slimline3 and 5,   but neither have what U refer to as lockscrews like that dish has.  It looks like it would be easier to dither and am surprised they changed the set up as the lock system looks quite professional and the Slimline3 and 5 neither have that look.

Its all there, you just need to locate it.  As you're standing behind the dish, the fine tune knob for elevation is on the left, and the lock down nuts are on either side of the az/el assembly.  The fine tune knob for azimuth is on the right, and there are 2 lock down nuts on the underside of the az/el assembly toward the front.

I know what those are,  I was thinking that the lockdown for the dither doodad was really neat and too bad that my dish did not have that type setup.  Looks like it would really help for setting the system up much better.

The Slimline dish has two sets of lock down bolts on the elevation and azimuth.  The mains lock the dish so it cannot move.  If the fine tuning bolts are tight and the mains are loosened, that allows the fine tuning screws to adjust the elevation or azimuth.  Works like a charm.

I just don't have much luck trying to get mine adjusted.  I really do like the appearance of the one above that is supposed to be outdated.  Looks to me like that would have been easier to adjust.

not even close.  thew old "side car" dish was a nightmare to align.  the new slimline dish makes this process a piece of cake

Main thing I see wrong with that video is that he wasn't smart enough to mount the bolts the right way for the dish tilt.  I also do not see how the roof antenna and the sat could be split with the b band converter and used and then to top it off he says you split the signal again at the unit.  Wow.  I don't have an outside antenna that I wish to use,  but really would not want to use that video,  thank you very much.

It was meant to assist you in locating the fine tuning screws.  If you want something more precisely technical. try this one.

U got to love that one.  Wish it were that simple.  This morning I checked one of my sats and saw the bubble was off center,  so aligned it and did nothing else,  but completely lost my signals of mid 80's on 99c and dropped 101 from 90'a to mid 70's and no matter what I do can not get either to come back.

Maybe your dish is slightly warped?  We see these sorts of symptoms when a dish's shape is slightly off, perhaps due to damage or age.

Would that not be strange,  since my bubble was slightly off and I just centered to make sure mast was plumb and did nothing else?  Would that make all my settings go so low?

Yes.  Alignment assumes that the dish geometry is spot on.  A warp in the dish, or a bend in the LNB arm will make it virtually impossible to maximize your signal readings.
