IF you Can NOT get HD service -- the Meg2 SD channels are going away meaning -NO SD receivers for you --Why NOT call 1-800-531-5000 and have a Someone come out and see if you can get a HD signal

DTV is shutting down the MPEG2 SD channels rendering all SD receivers and dishes obsolete so they are not replacing or activating them.

DirecTV grandfathered SD-only service in late 2015 in preparation for the full MPEG-2/SD-only shutdown. That shutdown started April 2019, and though hasn't completed as soon as planned it is still on the way out. SD-only TVs haven't been made in over a decade. So DirecTV has to keep up with the times, even if a few outliers cannot.

Best you can do is call DirecTV to request their MPEG swap (not upgrade) to get a tech out to try and get line of sight for MPEG-4.

Before you do so, what are the models of each box you have (not just the one that quit)? Just to see how the swap would affect your current setup.

HD isn’t the issue, it’s the mpeg2 encryption that is going away. You need an mpeg4 receiver and dish that receives all satellites. Besides, HD isn’t just on one satellite. Your receiver and dish replacement (if needed) should be free with no obligation. You might as well find out if they can get HD. Make sure you get the free, no obligationreplacement, though.
