SWM not detected on new HR54

I have a very old system with a D12-100 receiver. After Tivo DVR support was halted, I needed a new DVR. Directv sent an HR54 genie to replace the D12. However, in the initial setup I get SWM not detected. As I understand it, this is likely because the dish is not receiving power. I thought the HR54 was supposed to power the LNB of the dish like the D12. The D12 outputs about 13.5VDC over the coax, but the HR54 outputs less than 1.0VDC.  Is my HR54 defective?

Your HR54 is not defective. The issue is because likely DIRECTV never upgraded you to a SWM HD dish. You may still be using the older 18 inch dish or 18x20 inch dish which at this point will only receive SD programming. SD/MPEG2 is being phased out so that’s the main reason why DIRECTV upgraded you from the D12 to the HR54. However, I’m sure they made a mistake and forgot that your dish also needed to be updated.

So, please verify if you have an 18 inch dish outside or similar. Also, you are CORRECT. The HR54 does output all the power needed for SWM without the need of a power inserter. So, upon installation, be sure that the power inserter is put away because it is not necessary and could cause issues if plugged in.

As an 18 inch dish is NOT SWM and the HR54 requires SWM to function, they will not work together. Hence, the HR54 is throwing the error ‘Cannot detect SWM.’

You probably need a new SWM slimline dish, you needed the free MPEG2 swap offer with no conract that will replace the dish and the D12 with what you got.  DTV shouldn't have shipped you the HR54 and probably just upgraded you with a new 2 yr contract.

I'm sure that Directv knows what equipment I have and that this is not the first time they've shipped a Genie to a long time user.  Guess I'm stuck with the old SD system.

DTV is shutting down the MPEG2 SD channels so to continue using DTV you have to be upgraded to MPEG4 dish and receivers.

@dellaent

If DirecTV shipped you an HR54 to replace your D12, that is the problem. A tech is required to update your system to SWM and replace your receiving dish. A swap or upgrade to your first Genie is not self-install.

This is a known issue of their system when sometimes it doesn't default to a tech install and an agent who doesn't know better just submits the order without scheduling the tech.

You are not stuck with the old SD system. DirecTV is shutting down the MPEG-2/SD-only feeds. Your system is required to be updated or you go without TV.

I'm scheduled for a tech visit to presumably replace my 25 year old dish and get me going. Will update after the visit. Thanks all for clearing this up.

Is the D12 your only box? If not, what are the models of your others. Want to make sure all goes as well as possible.
