Tailgating Setup

I'm sure this has been covered in other threads but what I've read it appears that most threads have different solutions.

I live outside Washington, DC (zip code 22031).

I have whole room DVR

I have 1 HD receiver (H24-200) and 1 HD-DVR receiver (HR24-100).

I plan on tailgating in Clemson, SC (zip code 29631).  I would like to setup DirecTV at my tailgate.  It has many many years since I've set one up.  In fact the last time was with a single LNB dish and a tube (non-HDTV).

I will take the H24-200 receiver to Clemson.

My questions are what channels would I be able to get if I used a single LNB dish and the H24-200 receiver.  Would I have to do any specific configuration change on my receiver if changing to a single LNB dish?

If I wanted to get HD channels would I be able to get them in Clemson.  What would be the best dish to setup to get the HD channels?

Due to the distance from Washington, DC is there any chance of getting any network stations (NBC, CBS, FOX).  It necessarily doesn't have to be the local channels from Washington or Clemson.

Looking for some guidance on what I would need as I have an inverter and a deep cell marine battery and a 32" HDTV that I will be taking.

1. You'll receive all of the SD channels that are included in your subscription package, except the Washington DC Local Stations (because you're likely outside their spot beam satellite coverage area).

2. You would need a Slimline HD dish to receive any HD channels.  The 3-LNB Slimline would suffice, and it's a bit easier to setup than the 5-LNB Slimline.  But both are trickier than the simple 18" round single LNB dish.

3. You won't receive any Washington DC local stations that far away.  The only way to receive the Clemson area local channels is with an off-air tuner ... either the tuner in your HDTV, or the AM21 Off-Air Tuner Accessory connected to your H24 HD Receiver.  Both would require an off-air antenna.

4. I can't offer you any advice on inverters or deep cell marine batteries.  I think a generator would be more suitable, unless you can carry a large bank of batteries.

5. Here are the dish setup steps you'll need to follow on your H24.  Be sure to practice before embarrassing yourself at the tailgate.

Dish Type Setup Steps:

From the Menu

  • Using the Arrow buttons navigate to - select Parental, Favorites, Setup - press Select button
  • Using the Arrow buttons navigate to highlight - select System Set Up - press Select button
  • Using the Arrow buttons navigate to highlight - select Satellite - press Select button
  • Using the Arrow buttons navigate to highlight - select Repeat Satellite Setup - press Select button
  • Follow the on screen instructions and press the - Dash button
  • A new screen will be shown
  • Use the Arrow buttons navigate to Switch - then press the Select button
  • In the drop-down box use the Arrow buttons to highlight  "02 Multiswitch" then press Select button
  • Use the Arrow buttons and highlight Dish Type - press the Select button
  • In the drop-down box use the Arrow buttons to highlight "01-18" round" then press the Select button
  • Use the Arrow buttons to navigate to Continue until you can highlight
  • Watch DirectTV

@litzdog911 - The Dish Setup you explain, I'm assuming it is for the 18" round single LNB dish.  Do I need to do a different procedure if I use a 3-LNB slimline dish at the tailgate.  I'm assuming my house has the 5-LNB slimline since I get HD channels.

@kshealy - That dish setup is going to be for ANY dish, you will see when you do it, that there is a list of every dish for you to choose on the 'Select Dish Type' screen.

Yes, just select

03: Slimline - 3

I use an inverter connected to the accessorie plug in the rear of my van when I tailgate.

May I ask a related question. What difference in HD stations are nthere between the 3lnb and the 5? More specifically as I am tailgating all I really care about are the Locals, 212HD and the NFLHD package.

No difference. All HD channels are beamed from the 99 and 103ºW satellites, and both those dishes receive them.

@litzdog911 - Is there any difference then between a 3 lnb and a 5 lnb dish?  Are there any advantages to having a 5 lnb dish over a 3 lnb dish?

Yes.  5-LNB is harder to align.  And it also receives the 110 and 119ºW satellites.  But those are only relevant satellites if you want the Spanish Package channels or your SD Locals are beamed from 119ºW.

I'm looking atpssibly using the VU Cube for tailgating.  Would the dish selection be 01-18 Round or is there another selection if using the Cuber?

One last question.  I know the VU Cube 1000 does not get HD channels with DirecTV, but will there be an issue with the H24-200 receiver that I have.  I haven't been able to locate any info on compatible receivers for this unit.

H24 will work fine.  Just follow the satellite setup steps posted earlier.

Jim,

What about the mpeg4 formats. I thought some of the HD stations like the NFL Package were transmitted in mpeg4 and are only accessible with the 5lnb.

Pretty sure that the SD NFL Sunday Ticket games are still broadcast from 101ºW in MPEG2.

I am trying to do a similar install but when I go to the setup menu, I am not getting any options to repeat satellite setup.  After I select setup, I go right to the signal strength screen.  Any thoughts or suggestions?
