To have a c61k for 4K or not with an HR54, that is the Q. That DTV tech are saying no today opposite of the forum.

I have a new 2020 LG oled being delivered tomorrow and I have a HR54 HDD receiver. I have been told by 3 different Direct TV support reps that’ll only need the HR 54 and it not necessary to have the C61k. Just tune to the 4K channels and they’ll work. Last rep indicated if I really wanted a C61k receiver it would be redundant and I could either go buy one from an ATT or Best Buy store or he has no problem ti just to ship me one that would take a week to arrive. Is there something very new that makes this true? And if it ends up I do need it, how do I wire it with the HR54.

HR54s CANNOT output 4K video via their HDMI connection. Only the C61K networked to an HR54 can do that.

You can't buy DTV receivers at Best Buy or from an AT&T store either but you can from online dealers.  Order a 4K upgrade after the TV is set up and the tech will bring the C61K and install it and move the HR54 if needed.

You are getting incredibly bad advice from Directv. To get 4K, you need a C61K connected to the HR54. That is the ONLY way you will get 4K. Read shannon02's post.

@Archers

You got bad info from those reps. Here is the correct info.

4K Requirements:

HR54 Genie on non 4K tv (Can connect to a 4K tv, but will not provide the 4K feed to it).

C61K Mini Genie Client (wired only at this time) on 4K tv.

Remember Client has no tuner of its own, uses 1 from the Genie.

4K tv must support HDCP 2.2, HDMI 2.0, and 60 FPS

DirecTV Installation, 4K tv must be there

Package Select or above as of 12/15/2016 (used to be only Ultimate or Premier). So only the Family package will not get 4K service at all.

At this time there are only a couple of channels in 4K, plus a few PPVs.

Even if you have multiple C61K or RVU clients, only one tv can be using a 4K channel at a time.

The reason you cannot get 4K from the HR54 itself, is the 4K requirements updated when it was too far into production. So instead of starting over building motherboards for HDMI 2.0, they quickly came out with an updated Client (C61K) which was the cheaper and quicker solution.

There are a couple downsides. First of all Clients in general are downgrades to HDDVRs in general, having no tuners or recording space of their own and instead stealing all that from the Genie. Secondly if you only have 1 TV at all, then you pay $7 a month as if you had a second TV. Both true 4K content and DirecTV boxes for it are in the early days, so I wouldn't worry about a 4K upgrade at this time.

Thank you all for the great detail and quick feed back. I did try to call again today to request a C61K now they’re telling me I have to take a replacement of the HR 54 and get a genie2 Instead in order to get a C61k. and pay a $50 install. I do have two televisions one is standard and the new one for K and If I understand correctly I just need the C61K and need a splitter off of the HR54 which I will move to the standard TV and replacement of my wireless Genie to keep the HDDDvr. Sounds like I have to just call and be persistent.

The HS17 Genie2 will not allow you to keep the HRDVR as it is a client only system. You already have a splitter all you need is a coax from it to the C61K.

I've called three times and gotten three different answers.  I have an HR54 and just got two C61k's.  I currently have two 4K TVs, but am likely to add another in the near future.  I thought I could set up the HR54 on a non-4K TV and put the C61k's on the 4k TVs and it would work that way.  It gave me a 775 error (satellite connection).  When I called back, I was told I have to put the C61k on the SAME TV as the HR54 in order to get 4K there.  Is that right?

I have an extra HD-DVR to put on the non-4K TV for now, but just not sure it sounds quite right.

You have to make sure whatever coax the HR54 is connected to has to be connected to the red power pass through port on the SWM splitter so it can power the SWM LNB on the dish arm that is what caused the 775 error code.  To be sure you can only stream one 4K channel to one TV at a time.

God bless you.  Just saved me from pulling out the last of my hair.

If only any of the three special accounts reps (all very pleasant) could have had this insight.

Unfortunately 4K equipment is still in their infancy so agents are not quite as knowledgeable. Plus most agents over the phone do not have experience with actual install. Seems some basic connection familiarization for their agents would be a good idea, but that is just my opinion.
