Transfer from one external hard drive to another.
I just bought a new external hard drive (ESATA) to replace one that is failing before it fails completely. I know I can transfer the recordings from my old external drive to the new one with my computer after I format the new drive using the HR44 DVR.
My question is if I replace the HR44 with a new one since it's several years old, can I format the new hard drive with the new HR44 and still be able to copy recordings from the old hard drive on my computer? That way everything will be new and I won't be losing recordings.
If this is not possible I will keep the HR44 I'm using now.

No, the recording are encrypted to the DVR that recorded them and can't be transferred to another hard drive and it is against the TOS to open the HR44 or alter the software/format.

This seems to be against other posts that say I can copy programs from one hard drive to another once I format that new hard drive on the HR44. I had no plan to open the HR44 at all. I thought it might me a good idea to replace it due to age.

DirecTV has NEVER had the option to copy recordings from one hard drive to another. They are encrypted to their exact DVR. You cannot copy to your computer for transfer.
With Whole Home DVR each box can watch what is recorded on any of your DVRs. This does not copy from one drive to another.
The only copy option that DirecTV had was with MobileDVR you were able to temporarily (30 days) copy recordings to a mobile device (smart phone or tablet) for use while traveling. The new DirecTV app didn't support this at launch, but recent updates are supposed to return functionality of old options. And that is one-way as cannot be used to transfer back.
This is is how DirecTV has operated. Whatever posts you are referring to are either false, you misunderstood, or are referring to non-supported 3rd party options to replace the internal drive.

AFAIK DTV no longer has any HR44 and limited HR54, They are only installing the HS17 Genie2.

You can (but not easily) transfer recordings from one drive to another using a Linux program known as GParted. You need to be tech savvy in order to do this as it requires formatting the new drive, performing graceful shutdowns on both HDDs, burning a GParted live image (ISO) to a USB drive, booting off the drive on a DESKTOP PC, and having both drives plugged in at the same time in order to restore the data.

As mentioned, by design you're not supposed to be able to transfer recordings. But as my colleague pointed out there can be a rather complicated 3rd party way to do it. Just be aware it is not supported as it is not supposed to be allowed.
