TV with Standard Reciever Does Not Resolute in Full Screen

I have a 32 inch 4:3 television with a standard reciever and I am having issues getting some channels to cover the entire screen especially on Sunday during football.  The top portion and bottom portion of the tv is black so it is very hard to see because the players are so small.  The settings are set to 4:3 on the reciever and the fornat button does not do anything on a standard reciever.

Does any body know how to watch a program full screen with a standard reciever?

With the transition to HiDef broadcasting, more and more shows are broadcast in 16:9 "widescreen" format.  Broadcasters have to make a tough choice when transmitting those shows on their SD channels ... either "letterbox" with black bars across the top/bottom, or "crop" by chopping off the sides of the video image.  The channels you're complaining about have chosen to letterbox.  There's nothing much you can do about it, except upgrade to HiDef and enjoy the full 16:9 widescreen experience.
