Two Genie 2's on same LAN network?
So I have a client who has 15 tv's each with a dtv wired client. He has two dishes, two accounts and two genie 2's. Seperate Moca networks.
As per my discussions with a veteran DTV tech that helps me with these large installs he has told me that I can't connect two genie 2's to the same LAN network. I'm not sure I believe him, he is the best dtv installer I've ever worked with but I don't think he knows jack (Edited per community guidelines) about networks outside of getting them online, which is totally OK btw.
Well my client went off and connected the downstairs genie which was not supposed to have an internet connection to wifi. My upstairs system does have a wired LAN connection for IP control. I didn't know he did this and we we playing with his setup and found that we had the downstairs playlist on the upstairs genie.
My question is, can we "actually" connect both to the network? Has anyone experienced adverse operations after doing this? What are the adverse effects if any?
Thanks all!

No problem --They will both ride on the same Network --What you will find --Since all the TV's are clients And each only connect to the HS-17 assigned =No issue--all Audio and Video is carried over DECA RG6- Connecting both the HS-17's to the same local Network & internet will not affect anything

Thanks Gold, that's great to hear. Will make my next trip out much easier. Client will be thrilled to have same playlist and on demand at every rcvr.
Now we just need DTV to re-up on Sunday ticket so I don't have to go redo a bunch of client setups. 🤞

HS17 Genie2 can only handle 7 TVs so how did you get 15?

We have two separate Genie systems installed. Connected 8 hard wire client's on Downstairs Genie 2, and 7 hard wire clients on upstairs Genie 2.

Thanks for a clarification that wasn't needed Shannon. The system is working fine, he doesn't run all tv's at once and understands the limitations. And yes, we have have two Genie 2's, can't really confuse them......they are kind of uniquely shaped....

Shannon02 wasn't clarifying, but asking a legitimate question since you seemed to have a setup that exceeded what they are built for and allowed on the account. So if there are workarounds, they are appreciated when shared.
Since the new account system has a limit of 8 devices (which Genie-2 counts towards that limit since it is a device limit, not TV limit) are both accounts are on the legacy DirecTV system before the acquisition by AT&T?

GENIE -HR54 & HR44 -You can have 8 Mini's only 3 can be in use at any one time --HS-17 you can have 8 with only 7 in use at any one time --That's how you can have 15 --on his system

The Genie-2 (HS17) was made to pair with 8 (same pair limit as regular Genie, including original HR34). Then the new account system has a 7 device limit, which the Genie-2 counted towards. Meaning only up to 7 TVs supported. Which is the most that particular box could support simultaneously anyway.
That is why I was thinking the OP is working with a setup on the old account system which has no such device limit. So as you say the Genie-2 paired with 8 Clients, even though only up to 7 can be in use at the same time.
My concern is with the network connection that both HS17s are seeing each other's playlist. Genie models being servers fighting each other is why only one on an account. Hopefully all the users in that large setup (2 full Genie-2 setups in same residence) don't end up with a bunch of conflicts from this.

However Both HS-17 "SEEING" Playlists will cause no conflict --as the HS-17 Does NOT play from one Hard drive to the other --as say a HR44 or a HR54 would that is connected to a (TV) .
The clients assigned to each hs-17 only play from that HR-17 hard drive
Both HS-17 Benefit from being connected to the Internet.

Hopefully there is good reason for 2 different accounts (other than only a single Genie per account). Otherwise on the legacy system, a mix of a Genie and HDDVRs and/or HD non-DVRs would have been a cheaper monthly bill (since not paying for 2 separate programming packages and receiver services).
But if it works, then great. Do what you can for a large setup.

Juniper, apparently Shannon deleted a message which was why I replied the second time to him, thus making the clarification comment make more sense.
The client had one existing long time account and was forced to create a new account to reach his desired 15 tv's at his new home. If he had brought me in prior to account decisions I would have steered him towards one genie 2 and an Hr54 with HD boxes like I've done at countless other large projects like this.
Gold, thanks again for clearing up an issue.
His system works great with 8 clients on one genie and 7 on the other.
Looking forward to networking them both.

@Juniper
Sadly this is what DTV sold him on. He set the dtv up before he hired me.
I would have preferred a swim 16,with two hr54's and HD boxes, but he has already had that and didn't want it again....
He wants his on demand and shared playlist so we're going to roll with it until it causes an issue, then we'll disconnect one genie 2 if it comes to it

Having 2 HR54s, a HS17 and an HR54, or any other combination of 2 main "Genies" would still have required 2 separate accounts. Managing Clients meant two servers couldn't work together well (though a few still have such a setup from the early testing days before they locked it out).
If an account would allow multiple Genies, with no Clients, that would be the dream (especially for as large a setup as his). I can only hope in the future they will make a SWM-only HDDVR, or a newer model of Genie, where the Genie-2 and HDDVRs can work together again.

Yeah maybe getting out from under part of att's thumb will allow dtv to find its way again.
As a pro integrator dtv is my favorite TV provider. Their equipment was always top notch. They are the easiest to control with automation systems. Preferred choice among my clientele.
Potential is there, just another company att have snapped up and destroyed before selling for a loss.

Wanted to give an update.
Even though all clients are wired and on a seperate dish plugging both Gene's into the same LAN network WILL cause problems.
We still had clients trying to connect to the other genie. The client had to boot up one genie with the other unplugged, then plug in the other once the first set of clients connected.
Since we use a third-party router I was able to put one genie behind my third party router and the other Genie on the ISP router. This allowed both to have on demand but still be on seperate LAN's. Once we did this all connection problems went away. We are now able to boot up both Gene's at the same time without any clients trying to connect to the wrong Genie.
