I have the same problem! I have worked on it off and on for two weeks and still no ability to activate an iPad, iPhone 4, iTouch, or PC to the Nomad (note none have a ' in the name). Below is my configuration and actions to attempt to get it to work. Any help or other ideas are much appreciated because at this point the Nomad is a very expensive doorstop.
Setup
DSL Router
Cisco E2000 Router running DD-WRT with multicast and UPnP
Nomad MDR1R0-01 XAM1A1113A3787
DirecTV reciever R22/100 software 0x4d1 verified connected to the internet through apps and iPad controls/streaming
Nomad service activated on account
I have reboot the Nomad multiple times (30 Second Reboots)
The Nomad has all three blue lights
I have deleted and reloaded the iDevice apps several times.
I have checked ports on the Nomad with a sniffer and opened ports 8082, 41524, 41531, and 52009 through the firewall without success.
I placed the Nomad in the DMZ on the E2000 router and placed the E2000 router in the DMZ - checking that I have ports open from the internet side - still unable to activate.
Errors:
I get "This iPhone has not bee added yet. You have 5 available license(s). You must be within your Home Network to activate your service."
Then when I press "Activate this IOS Device" I get "Activation Failure" You are missing one or more system requirements to activate your IPhone. Please refer to the Quickstart Guide. Owner's Manual, or visit www.directv.com/nomad for more information. (AR/1001)."
I am out of ideas. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Also note that the Nomads and the HD DVR's must be wired and coinfigured to the same network and sub net, otherwise they cannot see each other.

I don't think that the R22 by itself meets the requirements for the Nomad. the R22 is an odd ball DVR. if you had an HD receiver in the house, that R22 would essentially become an HDDVR, meeting the requirement for the Nomad. the key here is that you need DVR and HD service active on your account and with the R22 by itself you cannot do that

It appears you do not have the HDDVR service on your account. Please contact DIRECTV and request the service be added. Did you purchase the nomad through DIRECTV?

Don't they require at least one additional "true" HD Receiver/DVR on their account before the R22 can be authorized as an HD DVR?

I'm with Peds on this. I'd guess that Dhuff's problem is that they do not have HD service, don't have any HD equipment and need to get that activated. I'd also guess that if they could get Directv to activate HD service without actually installing anything (quite doubtful) then the Nomad would connect. Whether the R22 would shift to HD classification is again doubtful. This isn't the first case of a user seeking HD performance from a bare R22, and as I recall, they are seldom if ever successful.

First, I bought the Nomad through Directv because they sent me advertisment suggesting it and I wanted the capabilities.
Second, if i need HD service then why does none of the Nomad literature state that it is requried. This appears to be a misleading at a minimum! Even the support page says that all that is needed is:
- Active DIERCTV account and programming package
- High-speed internet service
- DIRECTV Plis HD DVR (model HR20 & higher or R22) with DVR service connected to the internet
- Wireless router connected to the internet with an available Ethernet port
- DIRECTV nomad connected to the wireless router
- A compatible computer or mobile device
- Mobile DVR Service
The link for all of the above is below.

I have all of these. Granted i do not have an HD DVR per se as mine is an R22 but if an HD DVR was required then why would DIRECTV ever put an "or" in the statement above?

It states "DIRECTV Plus HD DVR (model HR20 & higher or R22)" and you do not have a HR DVR, you have a SD DVR, model R22. The R22 can only become a HD DVR if it's part of a HD system. We've seen the argument you are making many times and what I'm telling you is fact. The Nomad requires a HD system to connect and that's pretty much it.

Everyone. Thanks for your help. My frustration is not meant at you; it's not meant to be personal. You do a great job and I appreciate the time and effort you put into advice for all of us. Thank you so much for your time. My frustration is knowing deep down you are right but hoping that it could be otherwise.
Thank You.

I really admire your frankness. Whenever reality doesn't meet expectations then disappointment sets in. As I posted earlier many folks who got an R22 issued to them as part of a SD system (they are never issued as part of a HD install) and who later found out the R22 could act as a HD DVR, were disappointed to find that having the R22 as a HD box carried restrictions, namely having HD service. Then they were doubly disappointed to learn that the R22 didn't qualify for adding HD, you actually had to have a HD receiver.

I too was unable to active my Nomad. I was getting a 656535 error code. All of the lights were blue but the software failed during the activation phase.
I was playing around with the DTV app on my iPhone (not the Nomad app) and discovered that it would not let me make any changes to my services because I had a "classic" (old) TV package (Choice Xtra Classic). I changed my TV package to a currently offered package (Choice Xtra) and I was finally able to activate Nomad.
Note that I only saw the message about the "classic" TV package on my iPhone. Looking at my services via a normal web browser did NOT display the message.
If you are having issues activating your Nomad I suggest that you check your TV package. If you have a "classic" package then you will not be able to add services (active your Nomad) until you upgrade you TV package to a currently offered package.
I hope this helps. Good luck
