Upgrade

I have an HR24/100 upstairs in my study and an HR23/700 on the main floor in the livingroom. The dish line comes into the basement, a single line, I have a SWM. I use Whole Home and am connected to the Internet. I've been having problems with the Whole Home lately. Every 2-3 minutes, the playback stops and starts for about 10 seconds, then is fine for 2-3 minutes, then repeats. Both boxes are probably 10 or more years old. I guess it's about time to upgrade. What should I get if I want to watch (sports) upstairs and news etc. with the wife downstairs? What wiring do I need etc.? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Have you reset both receivers?  DTV is installing the HS17 Genie2 that is a client only system and is not connected to any TV so you will get 3 boxes the HS17 Genie2 tower and 2 mini clients.

If HR24 and HR23 are your only boxes, then you have 2 upgrade options.

1. Upgrade the HR23 to a Genie. Would most likely get the 3rd generation (HR54). This is a 5 tuner, 1TB HDDVR, with the Picture in Picture (PiP) feature. As is the more capable box, I would have it on the TV that gets used the most.

2. Upgrade to the Genie-2 (HS17). This is a 7 tuner, 2TB, server tower. Does not go on a TV itself and requires Mini Genie Clients on each TV. Forbids other HDDVRs.

I would suggest option 1 while still available. The 2nd option has more total recording space, but loses other options. Clients cannot work without the main box so if the main goes down then every TV goes down. You cannot set separate parental controls per TV and you cannot lock one out from deleting the other's recordings as it is a single storage location. In either option you lose the recordings on the replaced HDDVR(s) as they do not transfer to another box. There is no difference in monthly cost with either option since you already have the required services of HD ($10), DVR ($10), Whole Home DVR ($3).

Alternatively you could go through troubleshooting to see if the connection issue could be resolved, or even schedule a service call with DirecTV.
