upgrading from round dish

I have a dish on my roof but it's the older round dish.  I'm looking to get service but I'll need to upgrade the dish to an oval dish.

My concern is, the spot the dish is on is on an overhang above the side door.  The house is to the right of the dish(if you're facing the dish)  The oval dishes I've seen are angled more to the right so my question is, is there an easy way to tell how much more to the right the dish will be?  I don't want to get someone out here only to find out the house will be in the way.

The easiest way is to schedule a dish replacement and let the installation tech tell you. If you don't have a clear line-of-sight, then the tech can move the dish, or you can cancel the installation.

If you can easily access the dish location, there are also smartphone apps that will show you where the satellites are located in the sky (e.g. DishPointer). You want clear view of the 99, 101, and 103ºW satellites.

Thanks a lot for the info, I'll have to check it out.

Be prepared that the MPEG swap of the old round dish should include replacing any MPEG-2 boxes. To be sure, what are the models of each box you have?

I don't have any boxes, the dish was on the roof when we moved in a few years ago.  I'll be getting new everything.

Like I said, the installer will be able to tell you if that existing location is good or if the dish needs to be moved.

Ah gotcha, you don't have DirecTV at all.

Order DirecTV and schedule your appointment. On site you would discuss with tech about your concerns with dish location. If the tech can get line of site in a good location, then you continue with install. If they are unable to find a spot that is both ok with you and gets the service, then you decline install and call DirecTV to close the order.

Alternatively you could see about having a pole mount installed instead, though that would be a custom charge of $75 to the tech.
