Upgrading to 4K Receivers...is DirecTV customer service telling the truth?

Hi all.

So, I had a bad lightning storm at my house a little over a week ago, and the lightning fried, among other things all of my tvs and all of my Directv receivers.  I have, or had, a Genie (mod. HR54-200), and 2 mini genies (mod. C61-100C-R).

Since my TVs got fried, and they were HD but rather old, I decided to upgrade my TVs to 4K models.  Now, I'd like to upgrade my DirecTV receivers to 4K, since they have to be replaced anyway.  Apparently, I don't qualify for a free upgrade...

So, I called DTV customer service.  The rep says that if I want 4K on all my TVs, I can replace the main genie with the same model I had (HR54-200), and one of the mini genies with the same model I had before as well.  The other mini genie will have to be a 4K model, that I will have to pay 210 bucks for...and he says that because this one mini genie is a 4K model, it will pass a 4K signal to the rest of the receivers so that all of them will be 4K.  Is this true?  Sounds like (Edited per community guidelines) to me...I don't understand how one 4K mini genie can make the non-4K receivers have a 4K signal.  Anybody heard of this?  Is this total crap?

The HR54 is 4K ready but you need C61K minis on all 4K TVs to watch 4K on them but you can only watch 4K on 1 TV at a time.  The cost for an HR54 is $299 each minis are $99.

The rep was just wrong. To get 4K on a TV you need a C61k connected to a genie server. The HR54 will support a single C61K, If you want 4K on more than one TV, you would need an Hs17 genie server which will support two C61Ks, for two TVs.

Thanks for the help!  DirecTV is going to upgrade me for free, since I have been a customer for almost 7 years

That rep was wrong. It does not pass through 4K to non-4K boxes. The only 4K model DirecTV has is the C61K. There are no 4K receivers.

HR54 Genie on non 4K tv (Can connect to a 4K tv, but will not provide the 4K feed to it).

C61K Mini Genie Client (wired only at this time) on 4K tv.

Remember Client has no tuner of its own, uses 1 from the Genie.

4K tv must support HDCP 2.2, HDMI 2.0, and 60 FPS

DirecTV Installation, 4K tv must be there

Package Select or above as of 12/15/2016 (used to be only Ultimate or Premier). So only the Family package will not get 4K service at all.

At this time there are only a couple channels in 4K (plus a few PPVs)

Even if you have multiple C61K or RVU clients, only one tv can be using a 4K channel at a time.

If you don't have a free upgrade, then these are the one-time lease costs per type of box.

Genie: $299

HDDVR $199

HD non-DVR $99

Mini Genie Client $99
